comment Execute a command from another directory in bash
@CraigMcQueen: not really. $? will contain the exit code of the last command that ran in the subshell. If you use the && variant (which you usually should), then you'll get the exit code of the first command that failed (or 0 if all went ok).

comment I have to manually start bash
I understand what you say but completely disagree. Especially if you're show stuff to beginners - teach the right way. It's less typing and more efficient. If you start by teaching bad habits, well, they stick. (But indeed this is a minor nit. Have it your way :-) ).

comment What might limit data transfer rate to NAS?
Both the models mentionned have external USB 2.0 ports (and an internal drive). USB 2.0 transfer rates are well above 5Mo/s.

comment How to remove directory flag?
Use ext2 (or 3 or 4) and debugfs. But that's completely pointless. Read about how filesystems work, flipping a bit on a directory inode will not magically transform it into a single file with all contained files packaged somehow. What format would that transformation use as a format anyway? tar? cpio? zip? plain concatenation? ISO? Think about it.
