Did somebody reinstall something on the linux box? If not, perhaps the linux box has moved to a different ip than the one you are connecting to?

I'm a little baffled why you'd use an OS X file format (IMG) to hold a ext2 file system, since OS X does not natively support ext2 and the only plugin I've found to support ext2 in OS X hasn't been updated for the last 4 versions of OS X.

Why "presumably in ext2"? OSX doesn't use ext2, it uses hpfs+.

By the way, this should only happen if the user is logged into a Gnome session. You shouldn't be removing the home directories of people who are logged in.
