comment iTerm2 loses “ls” colors if I ssh to a server
Thanks. I believe I have no write access but, I'm using iterm2 with solarize. If I do ls --color what colors will it use ? Can we do something like export TERM =xterm-color or we can't do this since this is on our remote machine?

ls -G don't show colors. If I do ls --color I get some. I don't know if the server shell as CLICOLOR and LSCOLORS set. If I echo CLICOLOR and LSCOLORS I got an empty line with nothing displayed.

comment Unix: ls, how to sort first directories then files etc
unfortunately, this doesn't work on osx terminal, since -- option is not available.

If I simple do: ls -la --group-directories-first it doesn't work. Perhaps it's a mac osx limitation that doesn't other on some others nix distros.

Doesn't work. ls: illegal option -- - usage: ls [-ABCFGHLOPRSTUWabcdefghiklmnopqrstuwx1] [file ...]

Those are related with permissions on that folder.

I've created a .bash_profile and place your lines inside. That worked. Some of my directories, not all, appear as a yellow/gold background - can you tell me why? Thanks.

The file isn't there. The only thing similar perhaps is one called ".bash_history"

Thanks for the clarification on your comment above. Now I understand your point. Any alternative suggestion then ?

@Gordon Davisson: I've created a directory. I've added files to it, including hidden files. I've make that command. It has deleted all the contents inside that directory recursively, and it haven't deleted any content ABOVE that directory. Can you please clarify your comment ?
