comment Use xrandr to set the absolute position of the screen?
I thought this didn't work with the "Awesome" window manager as it was cutting the top of the screen off, until I realised that you have to reload it (Mod4+Ctrl+R) before it will notice the change and put the windows back onto the visible area of the screen again.

comment rdesktop - windows 7 - mouse pointer invisible - no black outline
The fix only works for a single mouse cursor graphic. You'll have to repeat it from scratch (see the linked instructions on Unix & Linux StackExchange) for each different remote cursor, depending on how many different remote OSes/cursors you need.

comment Microsoft ODBC driver can't find Oracle Instant Client
@TallTed: Thanks for the reminder - when I tried originally it told me I had to wait for a while before I could mark it as accepted, then there was nothing to remind me to come back and do so!

comment Is there any way to get the windows cmd shell to expand wildcard paths?
@jww: The link you posted explains the standard use of the wildcard characters, but I can't see any mention of them being expanded by the shell. Unlike UNIX (and later Linux and Mac), Microsoft left wildcard expansion up to each individual application to implement, passing the command line parameters through as-is.

comment Firefox keeps asking if I want to open file with a certain program
There's a lightweight add on called InlineDisposition that fixes this bug by changing the way Firefox sees the ContentDisposition header. It works really well.

comment How does Intel Turbo Boost work?
To continue the road analogy, it's like they are saying the road's speed limit is 100 km/h, except if it's 3am and nobody else is around then you can go at 140 km/h - but you have to slow down again as soon as you see another car!
