Particle physics in my rear view mirror; data science in my headlights. My mother tongue is python, but I used C++ often while I was stuck/blessed with ROOT in physics. I dabble in Tex, Arduino, Raspi, bash, cluster computing, and more!

Unfortunately, no dice. I'm at the most up to date firmware already (new unit).

comment “Cannot Allocate Memory” error when trying to ssh or ping or curl due to unrelated vpn?
This worked, but I needed to actually turn off these settings for my ethernet port even though I was trying to connect to these computers with my wireless connection. I found that route get name.of.server.edu showed connecting to those machines was for some reason still bound to my ethernet card (which had been using the vpn).

Thanks. The evanescent problem has resolved itself for now. I'll make sure to update this answer when it reappears and I apply these techniques.

No warnings or errors appear in any log in /var/log, nothing in Console.app, and I don't have access to the vpn log. The vpn is started with Juniper Network Connect. Not much to go on...

comment The 'real', 'user' and 'sys' description from time(1) differ when they shouldn't?
If you didn't notice, I link to that exact question at the beginning of my post. I'm pondering why in one of my cases the relation holds true and in the other it does not where only amount of data processed with dd changes.

This works too, as long as you include the -r =)

comment Resume recursive scp transfer (with rsync?)
Thanks. I didn't think this was working because it would begin listing all my files but I didn't realize that it was showing the "file transfer" which just mean noticing the file was up to date. Right were my transfer left off it picked up with real (slower) transfers.

comment Vim-like keyboard input in all text fields in all programs
I followed some vimperator forums to vrome for chrome. I haven't gotten it to work, but for the sake of others there is an option.

I'll be checking vimperator for possible chrome extensions regularly. If I used Firefox, this would be awesome. It's a great start; thanks a lot!

Can you parse svn log for the users that have committed changes? Or is checking out the repo not an option?

Good solution. But not in my budget of $0!

This was useful. I'm putting together a different cluster with CentOS and now I'll look into Rocks for that one.

comment How can I make a screenshot on a Mac?
Holding the Control key down in addition to the other 3 keys listed by Kio will copy the desired screen capture to the clipboard instead of saving it. Handy if you don't want to clutter your desktop.

comment Open a PDF from within Preview in another Application using Services
The reason this came up was because I'm a dock-nazi; it remains as empty as possible and when papers wasn't opened I wanted to shorten by a click or two getting the dock icon there. The solution is just to keep Papers in the dock. If you make your comment an answer you'll get the best answer!

comment Execute “Get Info” on a file from command line in Mac OS X
I added another dump to /dev/null here: "...osascript - > /dev/null) <<EOF" since the output wasn't too useful and replaced it with a quick blurb. Great job on assembling/writing the codes that went into this answer.

I didn't get a chance to try it until now, but I'm getting this error which makes me laugh a little: ./getinfo.sh phBASE.sh execution error: Can’t make file ":⼀唀猀攀爀猀⼀洀眀漀漀搀猀⼀瀀栀䈀䄀匀䔀⸀猀栀" into type alias. (-1700)
