Attempting to install "Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools" on windows 7 gives a compatibility error. I'm guess it still may work but that was enough to cause me not to install it.

comment What dpi should I be scanning my old photos in?
On the point about time, for my scanner it takes about 50 seconds to scan a 600dpi photo whereas 1200dpi takes about 2 minutes 50 seconds, so, assuming you don't end up having to scan them twice, scanning at a higher resolution will actually take more of your time.

Interesting your comment about Chrome because I'm experiencing similar symptoms. After months of using RDP to same computer now it's freezing on me and there seems to be some relation to using chrome which I've also been using a long time. Too early in my diagnostic process to tell what's going on but seems similar. Did you ever resolve this?
