comment Difference Between Cores and Processors
The logical cores need to share the internal resources of the physical core providing them (cache etc).

comment Weird characters (´╗┐) at the start of a batch file
This is not correct. The BOM is a character set encoding artifact.

comment How do I Connect a 30yr-old Tandy 1400LT laptop to the internet?
@thkala I am old enough to have actually done this many moons ago, as well as connect a 8088 machine (which is very close to this V20) to the Internet using a net card under MS-DOS. MS-Kermit was usable with a single telnet session, but for multiple sessions it was too slow. I believe the user ended up using NCSA Telnet.

I believe the CPU is too slow for anything involving encryption to be usable.

comment How do I Connect a 30yr-old Tandy 1400LT laptop to the internet?
@ClemensBergmann a good terminal emulator knows how to talk to the hardware to do the necessary buffering so you can run much faster than 1200 baud.

This is the right answer. The machine is just barely powerful enough to run a terminal emulator - forget everything about running ssh on it.

comment NTP - How are NTP servers so accurate
@diskwuff out of curiosity - isn't the general flakiness of the network layer counteracted for in the NTP protocol?

comment Why can't you uninstall multiple programs at once in Windows?
@NiccoloM Easy in Linux? Try doing that in Red Hat based distributions...

comment Why is vim leaving temporary file versions all over the place?
They are not temporary backup files; they are the previous versions of the files. In a directory under version control they tend to become a nuisance.

comment How to tell when Windows and all startup programs have completed booting?
"Something is wrong and this must be fix". Or it is just the anti-virus doing its job very very thoroughly...

comment If DOS is single-tasking, how was multitasking possible in old version of Windows?
Monolithic does not mean what you think it does.

comment How do I tell mkdir to try creating dir1, and if it already exists create dir2, etc, until it hits a name that doesn't exist?
You misunderstand. I talk about whether the script is sensible to being run multiple times at once (multiple threads, multiple users etc) or not.

comment How do I tell mkdir to try creating dir1, and if it already exists create dir2, etc, until it hits a name that doesn't exist?
This is a good idea, but is not easy to parallize.

Binary search on the number might be good enough.

comment copy from NTFS to exFAT but “size on disk very” is very bigger than “size”
The allocation unit is the smallest size a non-empty file can have. If you have a lot of very small files they will each take 4 MB. Consider another filesystem or zipping the files.

comment Computer with OEM Windows 7, but no product key - can I backup and restore it?
Appears that the Advanced Token Manager does not work with OEM product keys, but then asks for the Product Key.

comment Is there a text file format that Excel supports opening and saving directly?
@Darius unfortunately this appears to be locale dependent - superuser.com/q/606272/7401

comment 2.5 screens shown on laptop display even at BIOS boot time (Vista, GeForce Go 7600)
I have now found that getting Ubuntu 12.04 Server to boot (using "help" enter, enter) and then install will then do something to both the GPU and the Ethernet chip - the GPU gets slightly better and can boot to VGA graphics but the cabled Ethernet controller can get a DHCP answer after quite a while but not get a route to the internet - so I could boot again into something looking almost normal. I am now trying to get a new Windows 7 trial installed so I can get the latest nvidea drivers applied when the GPU is in a good mood and see if it helps.

comment can I set an older version of java as a default for certain programs?
This is one of the things doable with applets and java web start.
