comment acquiring license for Mac OS X Lion
@Kangarooo consider adding links for further reading for those interested. Anyway, this clause has previously caused e.g. VMWare Fusion to explicitly check installation media to ensure it was a Server version.

comment 12 GB of RAM only 8GB is usable
Most likely the reboot was more important than the JDK's if you have fiddled with the system settings.

comment Why are they putting “processors” on hard drives?
@Michael.M Buffering is also an example of a feature which can be implemented in a hard drive with a processor.

@gronostaj so we also need Decentral Processing Units?

comment HOWTO: Optimizing Mac OS X UNIX environment for better programming
In the old days that was the only way there was. What you are asking for are a programmer friendly package system with the packages in it you need.

comment ssh _from_ Linux _to_ Windows: Which editor to use on Windows machine?
When I say server I mean it as in "Where the ssh daemon is running", not as the flavor of Windows. If you have it running with Windows 7, I'll give it a go.

So you are actively using vim on a Windows server you reach with ssh?

The exact editor is not important as long as it works well.

comment How can I install jdk1.6.0_02 on Mac OS?
May still be available on ADC. Otherwise try just launching "java" in Terminal.app or go to a web page with a Java applet in Safari.

The logical cores need to share the internal resources of the physical core providing them (cache etc).

comment Weird characters (´╗┐) at the start of a batch file
This is not correct. The BOM is a character set encoding artifact.

comment How do I Connect a 30yr-old Tandy 1400LT laptop to the internet?
@thkala I am old enough to have actually done this many moons ago, as well as connect a 8088 machine (which is very close to this V20) to the Internet using a net card under MS-DOS. MS-Kermit was usable with a single telnet session, but for multiple sessions it was too slow. I believe the user ended up using NCSA Telnet.

I believe the CPU is too slow for anything involving encryption to be usable.

@ClemensBergmann a good terminal emulator knows how to talk to the hardware to do the necessary buffering so you can run much faster than 1200 baud.

This is the right answer. The machine is just barely powerful enough to run a terminal emulator - forget everything about running ssh on it.

@diskwuff out of curiosity - isn't the general flakiness of the network layer counteracted for in the NTP protocol?

@NiccoloM Easy in Linux? Try doing that in Red Hat based distributions...

comment Why is vim leaving temporary file versions all over the place?
They are not temporary backup files; they are the previous versions of the files. In a directory under version control they tend to become a nuisance.

comment How to tell when Windows and all startup programs have completed booting?
"Something is wrong and this must be fix". Or it is just the anti-virus doing its job very very thoroughly...
