Newly 30-something guy who loves God, people, music, and computers, and happens to be decently good at the latter two.

IT experience is all self- and real-world-taught rather than classroom or book learning. Driven by an insatiable appetite for learning new ways to do things better. With better being defined as more usable to the end user, for which goal IT ought to exist, within bounds of reason.

I'm primarily skilled in Wintel systems and end user support, with hobbies in *nix and growing experience in MS server management, Office 2010 deployment and support, Windows 7 use, and several different types of professional business environments ranging from fast-food mega-conglomo-corps to international law firms to one of the largest corporate banks in the world.

Currently I am Network Administrator for a custom manufacturing firm primarily involved in the energy industry.

#1: profiles aren't ever hidden by default (as in, you have to hide them manually), so you shouldn't have to show hidden files to see whether your profile directory is in \Users\. #2, you're describing one part of your issue. Can you give us details on what you see when you try to log on? What you were doing before the whole thing blew up? What you're hoping to see once it's fixed?

comment Is there a way to “burn” audio to an ISO? (as an audio CD)
It is still dependent on the capability and quality of your audio hardware much more than a digital-to-digital-to-digital conversion like burning and ripping an ISO.

comment Stop IE from being started from a URL shortcut
and31415: No. The point isn't to prevent IE only, it's to block internet. A few users have installed FF or Chrome, and I don't really mind. But the Internet-blocked users do not have install capability to put alternatives on. Because Group Policy can specify disallowed programs per-user, I've used this to block IE, and therefore internet, access on a per user, per session basis.

As noted in the latter portion of the OP, uninstalling IE is not an option because there are simultaneously on this system people with and without allowed internet access. Any block or restriction must be within the individual user session and must not interact negatively with any other logged on user. I'll check out the handlers. My Exchange server decided today was a good day to have a fit, so this particular project is pushed off for the moment.

konqui, that's a good idea and I was thinking about it earlier today. Haven't figured out how that would be applied yet. I'll report back once I've dug a little deeper.

comment How move Windows titlebar off-screen in Windows 7?
Ok, that's same res as mine. So it's a preference issue. I'll spend a certain amount of time today seeing if it can be reliably removed. Gotta say, I really dislike it when one media (newsprint) is translated directly into another (internet) without any consideration of the differences between the two and why it might not be a wise idea to do a direct translation.

What resolution are you viewing this page at? Yea, there's an ad there, but it's not using up too much of the space in the window that I can see. It's annoying, but not a huge problem on my screens. However, I'll look at a few solutions for this Monday morning and report back.
