comment Is my OS installed onto my SSD?
@Cornelius Activation should not be a problem. I have yet to find a non-pirated copy of Windows that could not be activated. If you do it too often it might require you to call Microsoft and confirm (sometimes only to a machine) that you are only using one copy at a time.

comment How do I reset a WD Elements external hard drive to factory format?
@Paul Yes, that would be the pragmatic measure which I will probably take next if all else fails. My main motivation is understanding what WD does to the drive and not so much saving those few bucks on a new enclosure.

comment How do I reset a WD Elements external hard drive to factory format?
@techie007 Might be possible but I think it's unlikely. I'm thinking the drive was in a special format because I couldn't read it when I hooked it up via SATA first even though it was working fine via USB.

comment Connect to server using SFTP and public ssh key using FileZilla on Windows
Minor correction: You need to add the private key to FileZilla. The public key must be present on the server and the private key must be present on the client (i.e. FileZilla).

comment How to extract an embedded image from a SVG file?
Yes, it seems like Inkscape re-encodes the image but it saves PNG images by default. So I am assuming that the re-encoding is at least lossless.

comment How do I find the server program that a malware bot is trying to contact using wireshark?
Yes, they seem to be in Asia, more specifically Japan. You can most easily see this from the TLD: many of them end in .jp for Japan. I don't know why they are located there. Maybe the hacker is from Japan? Or maybe he has found a vulnerability in a software that mainly Japanese providers use? Maybe Japanese servers are hard to take down from the US?
