comment Virtual Screen Splitter
I tried to close my question as a duplicate, but it said that the question needs to be on superuser site. Do you want to post the solution as the answer in that case?

Bob, I have AMD Radeon HD 6900 video card. It does look like Virtual Display Manager might be a perfect solution, but I am not ready to shell out $60 for it, as this is just to allow kids to watch something while I use the same computer. I do have a laptop, a desktop, and a TV, but they like to be together with me at times and prefer to watch on the same screen that I am using. I wonder if anyone can point to a free or cheaper solution.

In looking at the post above and checking out several programs, I am finding that they are lacking the feature I am looking for. taoyue is correctly stating that it is still one screen to the operating system. What I need is something that tricks Windows into thinking that I have two monitors.

Great find, I will give it a try. You should post your comment as an answer.

comment Can Windows 7 be repaired to run with new motherboard?
Regarding "Going to Ubuntu might cause similar problems, although you won't have licensing issues.", I was referring to Ubuntu to avoid doing a fresh reinstall if I change my hardware. Are you saying I will face the same issue?

@FakeName, have you tried piping the files through tar, gzip, scp, and then untar? This just needs one line of code.

Yes, but you would do it only once and other commands like scp would not be delayed by dealing with individual files. If files can be kept in tar archive on the target machine, then you are also saving time on writing one file instead of many.

It was not an OS-breaking experience with Windows XP, with that in mind I though modern OS like Windows 7 would have no issue with this as well. What do you mean by "install Windows 7 on top of current installation"? When I try to install Windows 7 retail on top of the same partition where broken OEM Windows 7 is, it tells me that it will move the old Windows directory to Windows.old. This is highly undesirable for me as all settings and most installed programs will not work anymore.

Thanks for the answer. Needing a new license in either case, how would I get it to work with my existing installation? Do you know of any post where someone describes exactly what BIOS, driver, and registry settings to fiddle with? Would my situation be any different if I had retail version of Windows 7 installed instead of OEM?

Thanks @AaronBrown! It looks like the question was heavily edited, so that would explain the answers from other people.
