comment Laptop turning off when fan is spinning hard
Critical temperature varies from CPU to CPU. For example, a Core i7 Bloomfield series can operate up to 100 C before it will drop down to its lowest power and speed setting, and it will shut off at 120 C. None the less, high temperatures are not good for any component, and cooling them will certainly help performance and lifespan.

comment How far will you get with an 'rm -rf /' command?
@stimpy77 Even variations in how the filesystem of a given machine (even running the same OS and version of rm) will affect the result of the command. For example, if the core utilities or common commands are mounted as a memory filesystem, only loaded from disk on boot?

@Matej A quick look at the documentation for rm shows that option is well-known (or at least well-documented).

comment Can somebody recommend a program to compare differences in two text files and report the differences?
+1 for Meld and FOSS tools. My personal favorite (but I'm a Linux and Mac OS X junkie).

comment What Filesystem to use for Linux Ubuntu?
@Brendan Long ext2 is suitable for any use, and it is not required for /boot; GRUB2 -- the default for Ubuntu since 9.10 -- can boot from ext4 with no problems.
