comment How do I get my CPU fan to stop spinning when idle?
+1 I had a system that would scream like crazy and it would drive my office-mates mad. Opened it up (original plan was to slap a 120mm fan to let it spin slower) blew compressed air onto the HSF and voila quiet as a mouse without changing anything.

comment How did UNIX multitasking work without virtual memory?
And to clarify, the OS emulates an MMU in software, giving the illusion of virtual addresses without hardware support.

comment How did UNIX multitasking work without virtual memory?
@Andrew some VERY limited embedded systems run without vm (more precisely without an MMU), see for example uCLinux. However, non-mmu systems are not POSIX compliant so I guess you could say they are technically not a Unix...

@InquelineKea swappiness is the linux name for the parameter (I edited my answer to make this more clear) the windows memory management module is structured differently, but the basic concept applies. Ready boost is actually related to the third solution I stated, it moves the swap off the magnetic disk and onto a flash drive, which helps in reducing the latency of any swapping that the OS decides to do, but will not affect its tendency to swap. And unfortunately, even with flash memory, the latency is several orders of magnitudes slower than your RAM and you will still notice a slow down.

comment My motherboard has a 24 pin power connector, but my PSU only has a 20 pin connector. Will it work without an adapter?
Fortunately, the good folks behind the ATX standard actually keyed the connectors so it would be impossible to plug the 20-pin into the 24-pin the wrong way.

comment How to remote access Windows from Linux?
ssh won't do on-disk caching though, so you would at least benefit from the -P flag

If its over a wan, rdesktop -Pz hostname enables bitmap caching and compression, making the thing much more bearable.

comment Processor Multimedia Extensions. How Useful are they actually?
@Doc Thanks. All the wikipedia articles on the extensions describe the new op-codes and the implementation details beautifully, but not one mention of who actually uses this stuff. MMX is one of those that has been around long enough that I'm sure you can assume everyone has it..

comment Lenovo ThinkPad400s screen cracked. Warranty expired. What are my options?
+1 for ebay replacements, its cheap and easy to do especially on lenovo's/ibm. Reliability really depends on the model line, The T40's for instance were solid machines, but suffered from extreme motherboard flex that would slowly kill them for 6 months (the problem started usually 3-4 years down the line)

comment My Mac is seriously slow, playing up and a nuisance, shall I switch to Linux?
There are lots of missing details here, in particular - what Mac you have (PPC or early intel) what OSX version you are running, etc.

comment What is the oldest Windows operating system to run on a modern (2007-2009) computer?
ALl modern CPU's by intel and AMD still have real mode (a 16 bit mode with no virtualization still required by BIOS). And are technically backwards compatible with the 286 real mode and thus will run Windows 2.0, However the rest of the hardware may not be so nice, in particular the memory controller and the IDE controller, not to mention support for PCI is lacking in old systems (and ISA has been absent from motherboards for almost a decade now).
