I am a software engineering manager in the Cleveland, Ohio, USA area. I have over 13 years of experience with a variety of technologies including Java, Perl, PHP, Salesforce, SOAP, and others. I have a B.S. in Computer and Information Science and recently completed coursework for a M.S. in the same, but have not yet officially graduated.

Aside from my profession I also enjoy cooking, tinkering with hardware projects, and have been known to perform home improvement tasks with varying degrees of success.

comment Why are special characters such as “carriage return” represented as “^M”?
The term you are looking for is digraph, which means two characters that represent one character. Specifically, digraphs and trigraphs are used to represent nonprintable characters. Historically they have also been used for characters that do not appear on a keyboard, although with modern GUIs and keyboards this is less of an issue so this use is more archaic.

comment Mouse wheel scrolls when it shouldn't in Windows 7
In my case it was the hardware, and swapping hardware confirmed. New mouse, no problem. Same mouse different computer, same problem. In the past two years I have been using a different mouse without the problem in my original question. Your answer may be appropriate for some who google this question, but in my case, it really was hardware.

Jelmer, you had the correct answer but there is more to it than that. Could you please post your comment as an answer so I can select it? I will add a comment with the specific steps I had to take.

Sorry about the late response: turns out that buying a new mouse fixed it. Must have been one incredible coincidence that the mouse started going senile at the same time I installed Windows 7.

comment Why does the wireless connection on my router keep on disconnecting?
Not really an answer, but I recently bought a new wireless router and based on researching hundreds of reviews and web sites, it seems that most consumer-grade wireless routers leave a lot to be desired. Heat is an issue, and with it, reliability issues. I have to reboot my wireless router every 48 hours or so or performance suffers, even for the wired computers.

Posted. Please see the edit at the end of my post. I also posted a link to the entire config.

My problem is "it doesn't work." At first I could see the Samba server but not authenticate, now after tweaking settings per the Samba documentation, I can't even see the server (but ping works). What I am asking for is a configuration to make this work, since the google research I have done has come up inconclusive. Aside from that, help poring through my smb.conf (edited into the question now) would also be appreciated. While not a Linux noobie, I am not experienced enough to tackle this one myself.

comment ID3 tags are read incorrectly
There is plenty of documented evidence that WMP cannot handle ID3v2.4, such as superuser.com/questions/286483/… as well as wikipedia and plenty of google links.

I thought about trying to take it apart, but it has no screws that I can see. It appears that it clicked together and won't come back apart. But it worked fine in Vista, and in a single day didn't work fine in Win7. That smells strongly of some OS-level difference, I just don't know what.
