comment Is there a formula in excel to allow a search in one column? (we're trying to pull specific cities from one column)
I think you're looking for the vlookup command.

No it hasn't always existed. This is an aging Toshiba laptop, about 8 years old now, but it has been very reliable. I did a clean reinstall about a year ago, and I suspect it started then because I don't use USB sticks often (and this isn't my main computer) so I may not have noticed it until now. That is an option but I don't have a Linux live disk available, nor a CD-burner (I'm visiting family so all my stuff is at home). I'd say my main goal was figuring out the root cause of this so I don't have to avoid USB drives in future...

Yes, all other computers I've tried can access them. However I need them on this computer as they're music project files. I've tried rebooting too. As for other peripherals working, yes I've tried both a mouse and external keyboard and both work fine. I haven't reinstalled the USB driver... How do I access it, and do you know where can I find a clean version to download?

@Patches: I downloaded 0.9.2 and it works fine. About the skins, I don't really know how to do that (!) but it's alright. It's not a big change, and I'll happily get used to something if I know it works.

@Patches: Thanks. I am not on the same computer right now, but as soon as I get access to it later this evening I will try upgrading. I've avoided it because I've been using VLC since about 2006 and, call me an old fogey, but I really dislike the latest VLC skins.. Version 0.8 suits me fine :P

@boehj: Thanks, I tried with iTunes and Quicktime (see above). No, the files are only about 280MB each.

@David: Apologies, it's Windows XP. It was a batch of about 12 m4v files, all of which did the same thing. However, I just downloaded a sample m4v file from Apple's website and that seems to work fine on VLC, so I agree something might be wrong with the original 12 files. Funnily enough, I don't think the files are corrupted as they play fine on iTunes and Quicktime(?). I'd rather not use those players though -- they're unbelievably slow on this machine.
