comment How to choose LCD screen in notebook that can't be seen from “sideways”?
@Nifle That poor laptop is probably overheating like mad! It's bad enough putting laptops on a bed or something

comment Setting up a wireless repeater: does the host AP need to be set up as a repeater too?
Thanks for the answer though! Might look in to buying a DD-WRT compatible router at some point in the future, given the additional functionality it brings.

Already looked at DD-WRT and Tomato firmware, but neither are supported by the router I have, so all I have is the generic firmware available. The router is a Netgear DGN2000.

comment Installing Windows on a laptop using an external monitor (main display broken)
@BBlake Agreed, although I guess different manufacturers have different default settings so it is possible that by default, his doesn't do this.

@Florescu Adrian No, you can get the laptop to use the external monitor right from the word go (e.g. while it's loading the BIOS). The only problem is that normally the setting to specify this is in the BIOS itself, which without using the laptop screen could be tricky (Read: almost impossible) to change.

comment How to intentionally mess up a Mac?
Cant believe that works! You'd think there would be some kind of backup for system fonts? Would love to see what it looks like (Dont have a Mac to try it on)

Is the difference in text colour not enough to differentiate between the original email and your additions?

How fast is your internet connection, and what page does it load when you open a new tab? Is it a large page?

Do you know if it is easy for the admins to fix the problem, if it was raised with them?

@samarudge Ok, you probably clicked the wrong place. See instructions here: vistarewired.com/2007/07/02/repairing-your-internet-connection

Do this on the laptop while using Wi-Fi, by the way.

@samarudge Have you tried the network troubleshooting tool, built into Windows? Seeing what you've tried already, it's unlikely to fix it, but it's worth a try and may fix something you missed. Right click the network icon in the task bar and click 'Troubleshoot Problems'. EDIT: Actually after looking, in Vista it says 'Diagnose and repair' instead (I'm using Windows 7).

Have you tried connecting to another wireless network with it? Does that work?

comment Slow pc but enough resources left
@Simon Verbeke Also, how often does this happen? Do you notice it happens at any particular time? For example, does it happen soon after the computer has booted?

comment Slow pc but enough resources left
@Simon Verbeke Yup, thats normal. It should only slow down when the light is on pretty much solid, for longer than say 3 or 4 seconds. Obviously when Windows is booting up, or when you open something like photoshop, it will be on pretty much solid for a bit, but that is normal.

@Simon Verbeke Ok, fair enough :) Just keep your eye on that light then!

comment Slow pc but enough resources left
@Simon Verbeke I dont know of any HDD tests off hand, but try and check the HDD light on your computer a bit more often, espicially when it goes slow, and see if you notice a difference.

@Simon Verbeke Ok, went through the log instead and can see you're using avast! 5. A quick look shows that version 6 is available, so I would upgrade, even if that turns out not to be the issue.

@Simon Verbeke Do you notice excessive hard drive activity when it goes slow? What anti-virus software do you have? If your CPU never maxes out, and you have enough available RAM, it can only be your hard drive that is causing the slow down. Some older anti-virus softwares can cause this when they do scans.

comment Regular keyboard stuck as if a laptop function key was pressed
@Tomaka17 How can you say it doesn't satisfy you?? The problem is that it is using the letter keys as a number pad, when the Num Lock key is on (Which is a feature by the way, it's supposed to do that...). That is the only and proper way to turn it off. And if it is a desktop PC, how is it not an external keyboard?
