comment Suggestions on keeping laptop cool
+1 I love love love Notebook Hardware Control. I use it on a Toshiba tablet PC that's in a tablet case, which means that it has a harder time cooling. I also have it set to alert me when the temperature reaches certain ranges.

300W is pretty low for a modern PC, particularly if the PSU is having other problems.

comment Is it recommend to use Windows XP System Restore?
Yeah, it's saved my butt from a bad driver more than once. :)

What kind of beep? A "system" beep? (motherboard speaker) Is it only when you're doing something specific?

comment Officially announced RAM support size doesn't apply to one of twin rigs with just one difference
What power supplies are you using? Some boards are not compatible with high-efficiency power supplies, and will behave oddly as a result.

comment Windows 7, weird/annoying explorer problem
Are you running as a standard user, or administrator? Where are you trying to create/delete these folders? I'm not familiar with BitDefender (we use Forefront) but this has not ever happened to me on 3 different Windows 7 x64 machines. (home premium, business, ultimate)

comment Windows 7, weird/annoying explorer problem
On a related note, on at least two occasions I have unintentionally deleted a folder because I clicked a file or subfolder in the right-hand pane but Explorer was still "active" on the folder in the left-hand pane. :[ Thank Bill for the recycle bin...

comment Ubuntu program most compatible with Microsoft Office?
Also, StarOffice is a commercial version of OpenOffice, and they offer additional utilities and support that may improve the experience. (Never used it, but I do use OpenOffice and have been very happy with it...) Since it's a commercial product it might bypass some FLOSS-haters, and at $35 it's a much better value prop...

comment How can I easily switch between computers on a home network?
Though I think the "Remote Assistance" feature of Windows/RDP does allow a shared session.

I was running AV (Microsoft OneCare) until well after the performance problems started, so I'm reasonably sure it's not a virus.

Thanks. I replaced the RAM a while back thinking that might be it, but it hasn't made any difference. I might try the HD suggestion - I've got one around here somewhere that I was using to test Windows 7 on another computer.

@Jack - I'm running XP now, which is why I was disappointed to see it still occur... I have an Ubuntu LiveCD already, so I can give that a shot.

@Avery - I don't know, I'm not really surprised that progressive versions require more hardware. The opposite expectation (to borrow inazaruk's concept) is like wanting to buy progressively larger cars, yet still get the same gas mileage.

I used Process Explorer on it, and when it's running slowly like this ProcExp shows system idle process is at about 96%, and ProcExp is the next highest process... RAM is around 40% usage.

Yeah, I wondered about the video card. I ran one a while back that was supposed to test VRAM, but I don't know how hard it pushed the rest of the card.

No, I quit running AV on it a while back. Of course, with all the problems with it I never keep anything valuable on it anyway - it's my "try stuff out and see how it works" PC...

comment How to make menus open “fully” by default in MS Word 2003?
Office is the main culprit, though it no longer applies in 2007 (ribbon bar), and I think if you set it in any one of the apps it applies to the whole suite.
