comment How to limit CPU consumtion of a process group with standard GNU/Linux tools?
Doesn't seem like an esoteric scenario to me as I encounter it frequently. Users wanting to run larger processing tasks, but not allow them to knock down the rest of the machine at the same time. A % of CPU limit would be ideal.

comment How to diagnose slow (only for awhile after start) Windows 7 machine?
It can take 30 seconds for the system to respond to input, but the thrashing was going on for 30 minutes...

I haven't had time to capture the boot trace yet (SDK download takes awhile on DSL), but I ran across a Google article that suggested disabling superfetch. That made a tremendous improvement in responsiveness during as well as duration of disk thrashing.

@whs - I have an even slower, single core Atom machine here too, with the same RAM and also a slow laptop drive that does not exhibit the same issue. It settles in within a minute or 2 of booting. There's no reason for the faster machine to require over 30 minutes. Something abnormal is going on.

I think you missed the point. It performs acceptably when running applications that consume RAM, etc after the initial tie-up right after boot. It's no screamer, but is fine except for this disk thrashing right after boot (even with no applications running). After done thrashing, it runs perfectly fine even with OpenOffice, Chrome, and an IDE open at the same time (and they startup and load just fine too as long as I don't do it until the initial disk thrash is done).

comment How many times can I format a hard disk?
A modern voice coil mechanical drive is not going to lose calibration by seeking. Old stepper motor drives did suffer from drift though.

comment Why is it not recommended to shut down a computer “brutally” (power switch)?
Back when stepper motor drives ruled, one would (ideally) park the hard drive (placing the heads over a non-writeable cylinder) before shutting down (with physical power switch). Park software would also clear the write caches. Servo drives eliminated that parking need as they added a retract mechanism when power is lost, so you paused a few seconds before power off. The heads will retract to the parking cylinder before the air cushion allows the heads to settle to the surface. It was years after that when we actually got a "soft" power off buttons. Historically it was always a hard power off.

comment “Turn off router for 10 seconds” - Quantifiable?
On the ASUS board, that's why those boards usually have a jumper you can short (once battery is safely removed) to drain the stored power. It's basically shorting the system to force an immediate dissipation.

SPF seems to be pretty well adopted at this point (it's been around for a long time, adoption was a slow process). DKIM seems to be more hit or miss.

comment Installing VirtualBox Guest Additions on Windows 10?
Works fine for me without additions. Definitely some under the hood changes on 10. I'm having problems installing an application that made the transition from Vista to 7 to 8 without any problems.
