comment Pulling the plug out for 10 seconds
On modern boards, everything is mounted so tight that you're not going to be able to cut before desoldering. There's nothing to cut! The caps get soldered into a position tight against the board and then the legs are cut off from the other side.

comment How do I get more information on a potential network freeloader?
@rodey It's pretty easy to determine usable addresses from sniffing traffic and then just statically assign. I'd expect someone trying to be sneaky to do that rather than taking DHCP (so they wouldn't show up in the table). If you crack the key, this is also very easy. Not something computer clueless Joe Random freeloading neighbor would typically do though.

Consider dumping wireless completely if possible. Obviously if you move around with a laptop, you'd need it, but if it's just a "I don't feel like installing the wiring" situation with fixed machines, you might want to reconsider!

comment Is there any benefit to using IPv6 on my home network?
We've noticed the very slight improvement in performance on large file transfers internally.

comment Laptop with internal serial port in 2009 (and 2010)
If you have a good quality buffered USB to serial adapter, they will work in many (but not all) cases that the cheapies fail. Lack of real hardware serial ports on new machines forces me to keep laptops in service that I'd prefer to retire. :-(

comment Power Supply Too Big?
OK, +1 because it is possible. That said, it's horribly unlikely. I've run VERY low current devices off of PC power supplies on a bench and never hit the minimum load requirement on any of them. :-)

comment Other than disabling IPv6, is there a fix for slow utorrent web gui hosted on win7?
I'm curious to know the root cause. Disabling IPv6 is treating the symptom rather than fixing the real problem. Do you (did you) have any form of IPv6 connectivity setup? If not, did you try setting it up? IPv6 tunnels are readily available and a no-brainer to setup.

comment Need a diagnosis : Machine not booting up
Inspect the graphics card for burst capacitors. We've been having an epidemic over here of older Nvidia graphics cards bursting the capacitors and causing all kinds of bootup and/or display issues.

comment 16-bit DOS on Windows Vista+
LPT might be in the current version. I heard some discussion about it. If it didn't make this version, expect it soon (very active project, new versions come out pretty quick).

comment Is it necessary to switch off Wi-Fi after use?
At the low power levels that Wi-Fi runs, SWR is pretty much a non-factor. Even the cheapest finals can handle a large percentage of reflected power.

comment Remote desktop connection without locking the remote computer
As much as I'd like to recommend RealVNC (or any VNC for that matter), I can't (despite having been a very early user of it). RD connections feel much more responsive, especially over bandwidth constrained links.

comment Can viruses be spread via VGA cables?
Seems farfetched, but at one time viruses spreading via e-mail was a big joke amongst IT professionals since it was "impossible". Look at us now...

comment XP Restart After Power Failure
@Systech - Sounds like he wants to do like I have mine setup. I shutdown at night, then flip the power strip off that it's plugged into (to cut all the parasitic draw). Then I walk in the next morning, flip the power strip switch back on and everything autostarts.
