Just another nobody out in the world, banging out some code from time to time...

comment Is ZFS and RAID-Z worth using in home made NAS (freeNAS for example)
Solaris makes an excellent NAS solution, with having NFS and Samba...

Same applies to most hardware RAID out there...

I've found Solaris to be a decent work-oriented desktop OS as well, but can't recommend it for home use (where one might need access to more multimedia apps).

comment Does it take longer to download a zipped file than an unzipped file?
Some of us still use phone modems for Internet access. :-)

comment What's better a better VM app: VMWare, Parallels or Virtual PC
Yes, VirtualBox also has a good snapshot feature.

comment What is the impact of leaving a laptop in “sleep” mode (while on battery power)?
Reboot once a day is overkill. I use hibernate and don't typically need to reboot other than patch Tuesday and an occasional BSoD.

comment If my power supply is 700w, do I need a 700w UPS?
A 700w PSU if it were maxed out, would draw more than 700w... Very difficult to do given that most modern PSUs have very specific limitations on all the various rails.

comment What happened to the B: drive in Windows and why does the hard drive default to C?
I really don't see why people map drives at all anymore. Full network paths can be added sort of like "favorites" to your network places. Then, you can just select those instead of having to remember exactly where a particular drive letter points to. I use tons of network drives, yet only have a single mapped drive setup (to support a legacy app that can't handle UNC paths).

Still have to put drivers on floppies for OS installs sometimes (when hard drive driver required). Also use for moving small files around between machines that don't have free (or working) USB ports. Lots of little random stuff that us programmer/sysadmin people run into on a regular basis that a typical computer user may never encounter.

Wouldn't be available if you plugged it into my machine. I have 2 floppy drives... :-)

Some of us still actually have B: drives in our machines. I've got so many floppy drives laying around that I usually just go ahead and throw 2 in the boxes I put together. Surprisingly, it actually comes in handy from time to time!

I love the speed of my 15K Ultra 320 SCSI drives at home, but they sure are loud!

comment FileVault performance Snow Leopard
Maybe that's why I could never get Time Machine to work for me. It would crash and lock up the whole machine each time I tried to use it...

Same experience here, other than the occasional cleanup it does while shutting down. Even that isn't too much of a slowdown.
