comment Running rebaseall on Cygwin
If rebaseall still complains, check task manager for zombie Cygwin processes like sh, bash, ssh, etc.

comment How to install compiler and binutils on FreeNAS?
One up: How can this package be downloaded if the machine doesn't have a direct internet connection? That's why I was browsing the FTP site for package files. I didn't see a binutils.tbz file.

comment Why am I getting permission denied installing Powershell 2.0 on Windows XP (and certain other updates)?
Yes, I am a local admin on the workstation. I can install most other software without this restriction.

I was on the fence about onto which site to post. Since the subject matter is Windows XP, I came here.

When installing SP3, I get the same error message. Back to the original question...

comment Why doesn't update-manager allow me to upgrade distribution?
I see the merit in avoiding updates. It's certainly the case with Windows. However, I had the impression package-based installs were clean enough to do whole release upgrades like this. My home PC started with 7.04 and has been upgraded to each release without issues. Reinstalling sounds too intrusive.

comment Make Firefox automagically pick up default internet proxy?
It sounds to me that this task is best left up to that company's IT department. This is an infrastructure support issue if the desktop browsers are not pre-configured for Internet access.

+1, it sounds like you might be better off building a MicroITX or PicoITX system that's small, low power, silent, and still powerful enough to run the router software.

comment How to rebuild a Li Ion laptop battery?
Actually, the tab that broke is at the strap that connects 2 cells together side-by-side, not at the end of the cells. Looks like I'm just going to solder a short wire to hold them together, unless there are better ways to repair tabs.

comment Will leaving the laptop power brick connected to the power socket be dangerous?
I've noticed warm unconnected power bricks of many devices large and small. It is best to leave unplugged unless your electricity is free.

comment Password Cracking Windows Accounts
EFS will only provide a requirement that only the owning user or possibly local admin can access the files. If the PC becomes compromised, this would be trivial to circumvent. See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Encrypting_File_System
