comment How do I copy vector graphics out of a PDF?
@DanielAndersson I can only use the tools I have at work. Getting a new one (even free) involves asking several people.

The problem is the staggering inefficiency and overhead of Adobe Flash. It doesn't matter what browser you use, Flash demands more than it's share of CPU time.

comment Mac dock suddenly changed appearance
Ok, in Leopard killing the dock pretty much ends advanced window management until you log in again (the dock does not reset it's event listeners for Exposé). The good news is that in Mountain Lion killing the dock does not do in Mission Control (I have actually found that if mission control is misbehaving killing the Dock will restore proper behavior to it).

I think killing the Dock messes up the shortcuts for Mission Control too, but I haven't really checked on that.

Killing the Dock tends to mess up Exposé, you should just log out and back in instead.

comment Why does a zip file appear larger than the source file especially when it is text?
Open your favorite text editor. Now get your cat or small child and induce them to play with the keyboard for 5 minutes or so. You now have a large random text file! ;)

One option is to just cat all your logs into a single file. Another is to download a collection of text files (like from Gutenberg) and try compressing them or joining them into a single large file to experiment on.

Can you please tell us what your zip parameters were? I would have done something like zip -9T "example.zip" sample.log (-t is just to test the integrity of the archive.).

And that is a plain text 1GB log file?

comment How do I open a blank new window in IE9 instead of a copy of the current window?
@amiregelz I saw that, but I was hoping IE9 would have a setting to change. I don't think it is a duplicate as this is asking about the next version.

comment How to scan these little cards?
@mark A camera shop will be the most cost efficient solution unless you have enough slides to justify a the purchase of a media adapter or a dedicated slide scanner

To clarify, it did not return any text from the text zone? Also, can you yourself read the text in the image?

comment Replacement for horrible, horrible Character Map
I just tried Unicode Font Viewer, it's certainly better about displaying a plain than character map, but the UI is too unfriendly.

comment Opening an AVI file
Sometimes you can see what is inside a video file using the file command in Terminal.app. Open terminal, type file (remember the space after!) and then drag the file into the window, then hit return. File may tell you just what is in the AVI.

PopChar looks good, but €30 ($36) is too much at this time. It will be the middle of next week before I can give either of these a shot.

@DragonLord That feature seems to be broken, for me.

Character map is missing a bunch of characters and subranges. I need something better.

I forgot to state that I don't like this program. In another question I'm going to ask about alternatives.
