comment How do newlines in text files work?
OS X uses just Line Feed. Classic Mac OS uses just Carriage Return.

comment How to figure out the internal organization of my laptop
As a followup, lspci is a fun command for determining exactly what is attached to your PCI bus. Assuming you can then locate the devices it names, you should be able to start mapping out the PCI devices if nothing else.

comment What's the SIMPLEST way to extract old DVDs into AVI/MP4?
On the other hand, Handbrake is a great way to get yourself started in the world of video encoding. I used Handbrake for my first DVD rips, and after about a year of encoding I now feel entirely comfortable with the myriad settings. Altogether, Handbrake makes a great learning experience.

comment Phone detection?
@Gili: Hmm, yeah, I guess. Given sufficient data or enough motivation on the behalf of someone who wanted to use that data, that wouldn't cut it, but you can certainly make it harder. I retract my concern. =)

comment Phone detection?
Does it not seem contradictory to be able to uniquely identify a given device and also keep anonymous data? Any data that is unique to a person, combined with additional information (e.g. CCTV data) can be used to uniquely identify a person, with geolocation data being particularly bad. As an example, see the AOL Search Data Release controversy: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AOL_search_data_scandal

I've marked your answer correct because you are totally right. Unfortunately, it's a font installed by Microsoft Office and reinstalling it hasn't fixed the problem. Serves me right for being a Lion early adopter I suspect. Shame, I really like that font.

Wow, that's really weird. I'm upvoting the question based on that oddity.
