sorry I'm not sure how I missed this but each time I run this script it returns: invalid argument do you know why that could be ?

whoops turns out I had DOS line breaks in there, had to convert to UNIX. So this works very nicely. Thank you.

now that you have edited the script, do you not need to specify the string to look for ? eg '* ' or ' *'

Oh yes, I forgot to change the attribute. OK so now your initial example works removing the trailing whitespace. Now I'm trying to remove the leading whitespace replacing the line mv "$f" "$(sed 's/ *$//' <<< "$f")" with mv "$f" "$(sed 's/^ *//;s/ *$//' <<< "$f")" so perhaps I've misunderstood ?

Yes I'm running the script as sudo ./script.sh I also tried this on the cl IFS=$'\n'; for d in {1..9}; do find ~/test -name '* ' -depth $d | while read f; do mv "$f" "$(sed 's/ *$//' <<< "$f")" done done there was no error, but it just hung and did not return to the prompt.

If I enter the original on one line in Terminal I get: syntax error near unexpected token `do' and if run in a script i get command not found.

Thank you for the feedback. Now that you mention it I would certainly like to remove the leading whitespace too. I'm a bit confused how the script would look in that case. Do mean remove $'\n' and | while read to achieve this ?

comment OSX Can ping and GUI login but Unable to SSH login via LAN
@David Schwartz Thanks for the pointer. So I went to the host Security > Firewall and changed it from "Allow only essential Services" to "Allow all incoming connections". This worked. But I don't want the system completely open, so I tried "Set access for specific services and applications" and this also worked. However, I would be keen to learn what OSX will actually allow and not allow if set to "Allow all incoming connections" which appears to be the default setting.

@Ramhound I don't feel I'm learning very much by re-installing. I'd rather learn how this issue has been created so that I can avoid it in the future and also discover if there are any less time-consuming remedies. Do you know something about this particular issue ?

@jmreicha Thanks I just remembered I had NirSoft's app on the system and that's how I found the info at the bottom of the post. But I'm none the wiser as to the cause based on that info.

comment OSX - Parental Controls - System Preferences - Unchecked - But Not Blocked - Why?
Hi Luke, that will not prevent a user from gaining access to the System Preferences, and some of the panes will not require unlocking such as Desktop & Screen Saver pane.

comment How to create line breaks between extended attributes OSX xattr (jwodder)
@Daniel Beck, Extended File Attributes en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_file_attributes Xattr is the name of several applications that do similar but different tasks so it can be rather confusing to differentiate. I put the name (jwodder) there because that is one developer responsible for one of the xattr applications, Bob Ippolito pypi.python.org/pypi/xattr is another, then there is Matt Lye sourceforge.net/projects/xattr, and there are probably more. I don't know who is responsible for the version that comes installed with OSX.
