I can login to other users, using non-utf8 passwords. Everything works fine then. I'm just using the standard ssh from command line on mac/linux.

I've since reinstalled on a new sdcard, but still, cubian-nandinstall (from apt) doesn't work. It doesn't boot from NAND.

the "waiting for ip" is ubuntu waiting for a dhcp response, which it never gets

It stops for a while at "waiting for ip" during boot, until it fails and continues.
