comment How to specify folders to backup in Windows 8?
Windows 2000 backup didn't survive into XP. XP backup didn't survive into Vista. Vista backup didn't survive into 7. 7's backup has been replaced in 8. It's safe to say that Windows 9 will not use Windows 8's backup strategy. But i hadn't seen that sneaky feature!

comment How safe is my Windows 8 Microsoft Account?
"I've" means little ol' me. Just because a humble peon such as myself hasn't found it - doesn't mean the great SuperUser can't find it.

@Kyle Just because i said, "Microsoft is not documenting their algorithm" doesn't mean Microsoft is not documenting their algorithm. Just because i've not found it documented, blogged, talked about anywhere doesn't mean it hasn't been documented, blogged, or talked about anywhere. i'd love to be proven wrong.

comment Is there a way to test alternate IPv4 routes?
There is nobody else who can offer Internet Service. The fact that my (small) ISP ran their own data line, across international boundaries, to Level 3, to escape as much Bell as possible, is quite impressive. There is no other backbone in the area.

+1; i've never even heard of source routing. That answer's the question exactly; with the caveat that it doesn't work. As for the data flow; i knew it was "true enough" for the question. In the case of my ISP, they really only have two peers they can send traffic to. Although i never considered the possibility that packets might take the opposite route on the "return" trip.

comment Group Policy: Block access to \\localhost\C$
This answer, based on Zoredache's comment, is correct. By default only administrators can access the "administrative shares". There's little security to be gained by either a) disabling the administrative shares, or b) denying user access to them. If the remote user is an administrator they can just create any share they want (e.g. \\192.168.2.1\DriveC). If you're following a corporate security policy, then i would just turn off the admin shares. Security policies usually have little to do with security. Timely Schneier blog post

comment How to block a program from using IPv4?
@MichaelHampton Or perhaps i don't want to do any of those things, and i am asking on behalf of a friend. Perhaps i'm writing a book. Perhaps i'm trying to further the knowledge of all man-kind. Pick whatever situation you like that will help convince you to answer the question.

comment How to block a program from using IPv4?
@MichaelHampton i want disallow certain programs from using IPv4. The corollary is that other programs i want to (continue) to be allowed to use IPv4. In the case of WoW i want it to only use the faster IPv6 connection. In the case of Flash i want to defeat geolocation. In the case of uTorrent i want to unlink my torrenting from my IPv4 address. In the case of Flash i want to be unblocked because i am in Canada. In the case of Steam i want to test IPv6-only connectivity. In the case of Visual Studio i want to test IPv6 connectivity. i am trying to block programs from using IPv4.

comment How to use BCDEdit to dual boot Windows installations?
i understand BCD wraps a very powerful system, with a lot of complex options. On the other hand, i think i have a very simple question, that a lot of people have asked over the years - but never been able to get solved. "i have Windows over here, and another Windows over there. How do i boot between them?". Rather than a full tutorial on all the options of BCDEdit, i was hoping for the commands that can only solve this one (seemingly simple) problem. Perhaps almost something as simple as msconfig, except it lets you browse to another Windows install and it will add it for you.

@MichaelHampton Take your pick. Steam, Blizzard Launcher, WoW, uTorrent, Chrome, Photoshop, Flash.
