comment KB980408: Fix for Explorer freezing: does anyone know what app caused it?
i know it could be the fault of Explorer. But Windows ships with an application compatibility list containing over 1,300 applications. i'm confident that a 3rd party product is doing something wrong, and Microsoft is shipping a fix to work around someone else's bug. Adobe products themselves get 25 appcompat fixes.

comment How to resize Yahoo Messenger window?
+1 for oldversion.com - i didn't know about that i got version 8 of Ygly. It still had ads, doesn't support high-dpi mode (so everything is impossibly tiny to read), and it doesn't allow resizing. But it is a little bit shorter. So that's good.

@honk, @studiohack: i use Y!, not because it's a good product, but because it's the only product that can send SMS (i.e. text messages) for free. (Live Messenger gives an error message with the person i want to message, Skype requires credits)

@studiohack i did obscure my e-mail address. And by obscuring it, i changed it. i guess you don't know who Joel Splosky is. And my subtle joke fails.

comment How to force high-dpi scaling?
It wasn't until Windows Vista that Microsoft began leveraging Desktop Composition (what some mistakenly call Aero) to use the graphics card to scale applications that don't specifically opt-out of the scaling. There was no scaling in XP, and you don't want scaling in Vista 7. You want your application to be properly written. Walk over to a developer's machine, and change their resolution back to 1050, and set the dpi to 168. Everything will be the same huge zoomed in tard-mode, except the app won't behave properly. Tell them they're not getting any food or water until it's fixed.

comment Is there anything better than Microsoft Project?
@MarkM: So you understand his question perfectly, but you're going to complain because he didn't phrase it to your liking? That's almost as bad as people who down-vote questions by non-english speakers.

Technically you're right. i guess i should have phrased my question, "Download to temp, then move - if i ask it to."

comment How to make Google Chrome honor my Windows DPI setting?
Also, it would be a poor decision to call it 96dpi, rather than 100%. Nobody know, cares, or show have to know, or have to care, what a dpi is, and why there's 96 of them. Windows itself, when setting dpi, doesn't even call it dpi. They use percentage larger, e.g. 125%

How is A different from B? i mean, from an implementation point of view, you wouldn't notice any difference. And as a web-designer, both are equivalent. And while ie does "zoom", it doesn't "zoom". It doesn't "blow everything up". If it did then text would get fuzzy. It doesn't. ie rescales everything as appropriate. On the other hand i'm getting really tired of Chrome's poor high-dpi support. As soon as ie9, and it's fast rendering speed is released, i'm sooo switching back.

comment Is the Realtek network driver on Windows Update fixed yet?
To quote my comment on Troggy's answer: i'd prefer the driver that has gone through WHQL - rather than whatever beta they built this morning. But your point is taken.

comment Windows 7 Windows XP mode cannot run - it says “Require Hardware Assisted Virtualization”
i wish Microsoft would have left the requirement, forcing Intel and AMD to make the seven virtualization CPU instructions a de-facto part of the operation set - rather than making people pay extra for a feature already on the die, just disabled.

comment Where are my icons in Windows 7?
ImageRex.dll started with Vista, and provides the new, high-resolution, 256x256 icons. Shell32.dll maintains icons that have been around for over a decade (including the MS-DOS icon :) )

comment What is Win2sys.dll and why do I get this error?
Does the file Win2sys.dll exist? If it does, can you see what company made it? i'm pretty sure it's not something that ships with Windows.

Then we just have to figure out how to get Chrome to store history.
