comment pfSense: How to route traffic out the WAN port?
No, the only choices for interfaces are LAN or WAN.

comment Where does power consumption go in a computer?
The energy isn't regained by you, or the power supply. Yes it's converted back into electrical energy, it's not in a position to be used by you.

comment How to force high-dpi scaling?
No, the windows already are resizable. The problem is when the compositor composites the window for display. Right now it is not doing anything special, as the application said it doesn't need to be scaled. But in fact the window does need to be scaled.

It's released as magnetic and electric energy - since moving electrols radiate EM energy i.e. it's not in the same form as when you started - when you started the electric field was concentrated in the Vcc line of the CPU.

comment How to dock a window to an inside edge of a dual-monitor setup
In my case the logical setup matches the physical setup. i tried, and failed, to make windows dock against the left edge of my primary monitor (where i know there is an edge). i assume it was an overlooked use-case at Microsoft.

@trolle3000 Think of when you lift up a basketball, and put (potential) energy into it. When it comes back down your body cannot reclaim that energy, it is transferred into kinetic energy - not back into sugars in your body.

The design didn't take into account monitors of different resolutions, where it is an edge to bump into.

comment How do I disable the warning Chrome gives if a security certificate is not trusted?
Google's "Manager Certificates" screen is a wrapper around Window's Certificate Manager (certmgr.msc). Both expose the same underlying concept: if you want to trust an untrusted certificate, you trust it by added it to the trusted store.

comment How to run Firefox in Protected Mode? (i.e. at low integrity level)
i think everyone's missing the fact that i run other software at the Low Mandatory Integrity level; programs besides ie and Chrome (or FireFox). Example is a media player; i want code execution from a buffer overflow in a codec to not be allowed to write to anything except the two allowed locations. And i definitely don't want the code to be able to write to my Downloads folder, my Temp folder, or be able to modify settings related to Firefox. i should not be lifting security barriers on my computer to make one program work, the program should bend to the security barriers.

It doesn't matter the number of common locations you removed Low Integrity protection from. Adding certain locations to be no longer protected is defeating the purpose of protected mode. You made a judgement call in your own mind that writing to Temp, and the Mozilla AppData folder is an acceptable tradeoff; because we all know that really we want to prevent programs from accessing Windows and ProgramFiles. Problem is: i don't know what FF stores in AppData\Mozilla, but i sure don't want malware poisoning the update URLs or modifying my extensions. That's the point of security.

But having said all that, i still give the article a +1, because it helps to illustrate how Low privelage applications can only write to specific locations. But once again: Do not what this answer says. It's an example of a bad solution - like changing the permissions on Windows & Program Files folder to allow everyone full access, because one program wants to be able to write there. You're making things worse.

It should be noted, to anyone coming along, that performing these steps will essentially defeat the purpose of "proteted mode Firefox". By allowing FireFox to write to other locations (Temp, Mozilla, Downloads) you remove the purpose of having FF running at the Low mandatory integrity level. What's worse is that now all low privilege applications (i.e. ie, Chrome, my media player) can write to those locations. In other words: not only do you not gain anything here, you actually lose security. You're better off running FF as a standard user, and leaving the other folders alone.

comment KB980408: Fix for Explorer freezing: does anyone know what app caused it?
i know it could be the fault of Explorer. But Windows ships with an application compatibility list containing over 1,300 applications. i'm confident that a 3rd party product is doing something wrong, and Microsoft is shipping a fix to work around someone else's bug. Adobe products themselves get 25 appcompat fixes.

comment How to resize Yahoo Messenger window?
+1 for oldversion.com - i didn't know about that i got version 8 of Ygly. It still had ads, doesn't support high-dpi mode (so everything is impossibly tiny to read), and it doesn't allow resizing. But it is a little bit shorter. So that's good.

@honk, @studiohack: i use Y!, not because it's a good product, but because it's the only product that can send SMS (i.e. text messages) for free. (Live Messenger gives an error message with the person i want to message, Skype requires credits)

@studiohack i did obscure my e-mail address. And by obscuring it, i changed it. i guess you don't know who Joel Splosky is. And my subtle joke fails.

comment How to force high-dpi scaling?
It wasn't until Windows Vista that Microsoft began leveraging Desktop Composition (what some mistakenly call Aero) to use the graphics card to scale applications that don't specifically opt-out of the scaling. There was no scaling in XP, and you don't want scaling in Vista 7. You want your application to be properly written. Walk over to a developer's machine, and change their resolution back to 1050, and set the dpi to 168. Everything will be the same huge zoomed in tard-mode, except the app won't behave properly. Tell them they're not getting any food or water until it's fixed.

Technically you're right. i guess i should have phrased my question, "Download to temp, then move - if i ask it to."
