comment How to allow local LAN access while connected to Cisco VPN?
+1 for Mac client; which doesn't apply to me. And while this command might work, the Cisco client might delete it shortly after being created (the Cisco client seems to prevent anyone from changing routes)

@harrymc No, what i was saying is that i had already created the registry key. It did not effect any change, and did not affect the behaviour. Updated question with screenshot of regedit showing key

comment Cannot install Windows 8 because it can't create a new partition
It sounds like you can't convince Windows to purge current partitions. i had trouble convincing Windows to delete the special System Reserved partition. i can't remember how i solved it; enough selecting, and deleting, and purging, and removing. But i suggest the brute force approach. Download Western Digital's hard-drive tools, and tell it to Write all zeros to the drive. That will get rid of every partition. That way Windows can't refuse.

Unfortunately Microsoft won't let me have my WinQual reports!

@ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED Even with Process Monitor running, looking for any Path containing dmp, and all file activity from dwwin.exe, i see no dump files being created.

@0xC0000022L The event viewer shows events from Windows Error Reporting show, "Attached Files: ..., ..., C:\Users\ian\AppData\Local\Temp\WERD655.tmp.mdmp", which, unfortunately, is not there.

Where did you find them on your system? (i've checked two locations) What which settings for WER crash dumps do you have turned on? (i've checked 3 settings)

i did a dir *.dmp /s, dir *.mdmp /s from the Windows folder, and the root of my user profile folder.

comment BSOD - meaning of bugcheck?
On the other hand, you don't want to be updating drivers willy-nilly. Sometimes the latest and greatest has bugs that haven't been found yet. i prefer to trust WHQL certified drivers (off Windows Update). But if you're having a problem with something, you have no choice but to update the drivers.

It's not safe to assume that. Microsoft only has drivers that manufacturers submit to WHQL for WHQL testing. In my case, that meant a network chipset driver that was ten years old, rather than the one created last year. Realtek never bothered to submit it to Microsoft; so Windows Update won't have it. That's why you'll have to go to the manufacturers - sometimes. My motherboard's USB3.0 chipset has no drivers on Windows Update; i had to go to their web-site. nVidia doesn't always update WHQL drivers. Sometimes even motherboard chipset drivers.

comment BSOD - meaning of bugcheck?
It just happened on Sunday; my network card would stop responding. The only way to clear it was to unplug the cable and plug it back in. i checked Windows Update, but according to them the WHQL driver dated 2002 was the latest available for my Windows Server 2003. i had to go manually go to Realtek's homepage, download, and extract it. Then i could direct the Windows driver update to the download location to manually get the updated drivers. But, to answer your question, i would definitely ensure Windows Update says you're up to date.

@MichaelHampton Because at the time i wrote the question the trace to HE's Toronto server was Windsor -> Toronto -> Chicago -> New York -> Toronto. Today i just checked again, and my ISP got their own link up to Toronto, bypassing Bell!

comment How to specify folders to backup in Windows 8?
Windows 2000 backup didn't survive into XP. XP backup didn't survive into Vista. Vista backup didn't survive into 7. 7's backup has been replaced in 8. It's safe to say that Windows 9 will not use Windows 8's backup strategy. But i hadn't seen that sneaky feature!

"I've" means little ol' me. Just because a humble peon such as myself hasn't found it - doesn't mean the great SuperUser can't find it.

@Kyle Just because i said, "Microsoft is not documenting their algorithm" doesn't mean Microsoft is not documenting their algorithm. Just because i've not found it documented, blogged, talked about anywhere doesn't mean it hasn't been documented, blogged, or talked about anywhere. i'd love to be proven wrong.
