comment Is it possible to hint Windows to bring a process completely out of swap
@Tomas: The hint I got from Rik solved the problem: The erroneous pages are guard pages which aren't meant to be read. I added an explicit condition for that, so that the program should now run silently.

"but it is a problem"? I don't think it's a problem.

@Tomas: That's perfectly fine. I got plenty of rep for the original question already :-)

@Greg: Yeah, I get those errors too and just ignore them. If you look at the code, you'll see that most pages are read fine, and there are only occasional errors. If anyone with Windows skills can tell me what the error means and how I should handle it, I'd welcome that, but note that it's totally benign.

I once had a similar question, and wrote a program based on the answers I got on Stack Overflow.

comment Slipstreaming 64 bit XP CD on a 32 bit machine
This is bogus. On a 32-bit platform, Nlite only says, "Slipstreaming 64-bit Service Packs is supported only from 64 bit OS."

Maybe this would be better in /etc/network/interfaces?

comment How do you SSH from your desktop?
Many SSH servers will not allow root login at all. Log in as an ordinary user instead. (You can use sudo later.)

Use the Putty Agent and enable 'agent forwarding' in the Putty session settings.

comment How to correctly shutdown ubuntu in single-user mode?
Exiting from the init process is a kernel panic, hence the flashing lights.
