comment On unencrypted public wifi, what kind of real danger am I in?
RE: Q3, yes, https is secure, but many times it's just the login data (username/password) is encrypted, but the token (cookie) is not. Firesheep works by stealing this cookie.

comment Linux Device Files
I know what you mean, but I think you mean more like 'Device files have special formatting'. As how they work, they're pretty similar internally, just the formatting is different.

comment Will a Mac help me learn Linux?
I see your point, but since you have the ability to add a huge chunk of the UNIX toolkit, and it uses UNIX paths for these, you can still do a big chunk of UNIX things in cygwin. Granted, it does break down if you try to do Windows'y things. Our workloads differ obviously, i find it incredibly useful.

comment bash . moving files except files with a given suffix
You can't use xargs here - xargs adds parameters to the end, you need after mv. Remember that find allows both positive and negative patterns as well. Maybe something like: find $INCDIR -name 'HDR_10_*' ! -name '*.gz' -exec mv {} $BACKUPDIR \;
