comment Working on Amazon EC2 not smooth - expectations or setting issue?
Thank you for your answer. These links seem to be particularly focused on the shared hardware issue. Would getting dedicated RAM and CPU, such as offered by Rackspace and ProfitBricks, help in your view, or will fluent performance still lack due to the bandwidth usage by RDP Windows highlighted by the comment from Alan?

Thanks for your help Bon! It works indeed by blocking all ports for a specific IP address for a given schedule in the router. And when the router blocks these ports, the pc is still accessible to the network. I'm very happy with this - thanks again!

Thanks Bon. I have a Netgear RP614v4, which has indeed an option to block services during a specified time interval according to the documentation. The question now is: where can I find which program uses which port(s), or from another perspective, how can I block all ports without the LAN ports? Do you might have an idea? :)

Thanks for responding user1111261. :) This might work, but as I've said in my question I'm already aware of browser plugins which do the same (such as Leechblock for Firefox), and I'd also like to block instant messaging and email programs. Off course, I can block each of these programs in the firewall, but that would mean I'd have to change the settings in the firewall for multiple programs multiple times per day, which would not be a real solution in practice.

Thanks Hassan, that's not a bad idea but using it would also mean that outer computers and devices connected to router have their internet access blocked (from my technical understanding of it). I want to block internet access on my work pc -- I've updated my question to reflect that. Sorry, should have been more clear about that. :)
