comment For complicated mathematic calculations, are extra threads or high-speed disk access more important?
I agree with adding more RAM. i have very little understanding of combinatorics but they may be a suitable for GPU based calculations. if it can be mass-threaded then it will likely run much much faster on a GPU using CUDA or equivalent (many magnitudes faster on md5 cracking then top of the range CPU's).

comment How do I secure an USB device to a computer so it can't be stolen?
Glue mold to the USB connector, make it look so disgusting that no one would want to touch it let along steal it...

comment Linux: wipe hard drive to start over
When you boot a liveCD the system will create a small RAM drive to store the system files so it avoids putting anything on a disk, its only about 200mb (depending on the system) but most importantly it will show up as a /dev/hda or /dev/sda. ensure you have the correct drive, 'fdisk -l | grep Disk' will help you work out if it is the correct drive. the command will output the size of all detected disks.

comment Why are we still using CPUs instead of GPUs?
please excuse the poor grammar and in general sub-par writing style used in the above, i have not had my coffee. its a fairly complicated concept and the included link is where you should go if you want to understand more. not my bad explanation
