What about wget or a similar cli utility?

comment Why are USB flash drives so much slower than solid-state drives?
The answer of the above is basically "the speed of the USB connection" for everything up to and including USB-3.0.

comment How to securely delete files stored on a SSD?
Beware that (older) drives have been found to not implement this feature as it should. It should also work for HDD's, but on SSD's it has the advantage that it may actually finish in seconds instead of hours.

Note that this is an old answer; by now the SECURE ERASE should be supported by most if not all drives, including most hard disk drives.

Which was the winning jumper setting? Master or CS?

Cannot chat... it seems that I lose my login when I try to chat... Do you see a block of 8 pins next to the flat cable connection (with many more pins?) Some may be covered with a small piece of plastic / metal that connects two pins.

The pins on the drive yes... Look for a sticker for the meaning for your particular brand or lookup the manual on the internet. If it is already on master or cable select try the other one; if it is on slave it is certainly likely to be a problem. Otherwise you may want to check the partitions on the drive using e.g. GParted.

The BIOS settings for hard drives have nothing to do with USB connected drives, by the way.

By the way, USB-2.0 will require lot of waiting. It will max at 40 MB/s and it has huge latency issues (so don't mix copy commands, and beware of small files slowing down your transfer to near nothing at all - possibly first zip them on the other computer). USB-3 would have up to 4 times faster.

Have you in any way looked at the jumper settings on the IDE drives? Better put them on "master" setting, or - if that doesn't work - cable select (CSEL). Mostly the jumpers are at the back and the drive contains a sticker on how to configure the drives.

Cannot downvote yet, but the secure erase answer invalidates this argument. Of course, if you don't want to rely on the secure erase of the manufacturer, then physically destroying the flash is an option. But make sure you incinerate it or break all the chips, flash is very resilient.

comment How can I fix a corrupted PGP file?
You're one lucky guy :). If you can program, you could just create a program using Bouncy Castle libraries trying to parse the PGP format while stripping off an X number of bytes in repetition. If the parsing succeeds, you print the offset and/or continue with decryption. No doubt you can do the same thing with scripting and PGP command line.

Did you just prefix them, mix them in or even XOR or replace the bytes in the header? Please add any relevant information that you can think of.
