comment What is causing my newly built PC with Windows 7 to BSOD?
Thanks for the pointers. I have more info now thanks to BlueScreenView, I'll post another question with more specifics if I can't get this system working.

This is a very useful tool. It also shows disk IO per process and various other interesting metrics.

I've used this in the past and it works well, even though the gradients look so '90s.

False. See Dereleased's answer for the Control Panel setting to change.

comment Slow GIF animations in Firefox
My old laptop used to lag while scrolling if this option was on and it was a Windows XP machine. I don't think it's OS X specific.

What version of BIOS do you currently have installed? If a newer version is available, try updating.

You should be able to do this in the Nvidia or ATI Control Panel.

comment How safe is this computer from intrusion?
@The Guy: Even if you only visit trusted sites you may be vulnerable to attacks. For example the null-prefix SSL certificate vulnerability. Someone could highjack the DNS entry for your bank and conduct a man-in-the-middle attack. The SSL certificate would validate due to your system not being patched. A patched system would display the certificate as untrusted in this case.

The ones I link to for Firefox and Xulrunner are fairly serious. If you go to a site that's crafted to exploit them, they can essentially run anything with the privileges of the current user, which is a sudoer with no password on the LiveCD, they can essentially run anything as root.

Ubuntu has a very good firewall installed by default (the same used in many routers actually), named iptables. It's difficult to configure manually, but GUI tools exist to make it easy to setup.

comment Recursive chmod: rw for files, rwx for directories
@jwaddel: That should work. You're removing all execute bits, regardless of file/directory type, then adding execute to only directories and regular files that already have the execute bit on (which is now none.)

comment Why is my speed only limited to 12% of my max bandwidth?
1 Mbps = 1024 Kbps and 1024 Kbps = 128 KBps, which you are reporting.

comment Should I keep my swap file on an SSD drive?
Without knowing the detail of the write-wear algorithms, you can't know that a larger partition will help. I was under the impression the write-wear algorithms worked at the page level, regardless of partitioning since the SSD is random-access. The whole point of those algorithms is to avoid excessive wear so why wouldn't they use the whole drive to spread the writes, even for small partitions?

Then pick Async, otherwise the PCIe bus will also get overclocked and could cause stability problems.

The multiplier on pretty much all CPUs except for the "Extreme" editions are locked and cannot be changed in BIOS.
