comment How can I set the orientation of a single page in a multi-page document in Word 2007-2010?
pnuts: sorry, I forgot that I originally had to type a bit of jibberish text and select it. I figured this out and then made the write-up. Since I didn't have any text selected, I didn't see the option when I stepped through it a second time for this tutorial.

comment How to affectively diagnose ISP throttling (or other ISP related issues) and what to do about it?
allquixotic: Sorry for no response. I haven't abandoned this question but to be able to test out a few things, I need to be home when the problems occur. I work away from the home during the day, so I probably won't be able to update this post/mark an answer until this weekend.

Doubtful, but worth checking. The device is WPA2 secure with a long, cryptic passcode.

That would be odd, seeing that his happens every day, even on the weekends. Still, I get your point but, if this was EM interference wouldn't the quality of our connection degrade? i.e., wouldn't our signal strength drop from, say 4-5 bars to 1-2? This doesn't seem to happen.

I'll take a look at the one PC that stays connected at our home during the day. I doubt that's the problem, though, but you never know for sure.

Also, thanks for the ICSI Netalyer link. I'll be sure to give that a run this evening, and tomorrow.

RE: WiFi comments. Yes, we use WiFi but I don't understand what would cause this problem to occur for only 1 hour of the day, always at the specified time, every single day. I will try to directly plug into the router, though and see if that helps. I should have tried that first but I didn't think about it since our WiFi has worked great, otherwise. Of course, the ideal (for me) would be to give up WiFi, but that would involve getting our house wired, plus, some of these devices don't have a way to directly wire into them. (iPhone, iPads, Apple TV... yes, we are an Apple house.)

kalengi: Yes, unfortunately I was one, too, until a month ago. Corporate policies are some times very... slow... to... change.

comment What might cause a file to become corrupt, that is never written too?
Yes, I am aware of how they operate. I'm honestly not sure much water got into the system (miraculously). It sat in the puddle for no more than 5 seconds, and I didn't feel any water moving back and forth, nor did anything drain out of it. Still, it took a nasty fall and has quite a gash in the aluminum.

Well, the odd thing is the sector has worked fine for a week. These images change out pretty frequently (I also have a thunderbolt display), so I see the same image at least twice a day. When it showed up as my background this morning, I saw the artifacting, but not before.

Thanks for the additional information. I did run a disk verification, and it checked out. The odd thing is that this file wasn't corrupt until today. Everything has been working fine until now. Also, I have an SSD, not a HDD. Should that make any difference? Is there a chance that the SSD is sealed better?

It was in a sleep state (since it was closed) and, yes, I have an SSD. I forgot to mention that.

comment Why does Windows/Microsoft Updates always take a long time to detect available updates?
Also, I am aware of the bit with the ActiveX components. (I've even developed a few.) What I don't understand is why detecting the need for new updates takes forever and doesn't appear to be doing anything when you run diagnostics on your PC in the middle of the process. Best answer is probably that the PC has sent information to MS and MS puts it in a queue, and analyses it before sending you a list of updates. I was, however, curious if any one knew the facts of the process. Thanks for your response though.

comment Why does Windows/Microsoft Updates always take a long time to detect available updates?
FYI, this was an install from the Win XP with SP3 iso, onto a VM. So there were no further service packs. That there are, were over 120 Critical Updates and (I think) around 40 recommended updates. This is the most current iso that is available on the MSDN.

comment Why does Windows/Microsoft Updates always take a long time to detect available updates?
Yes, I think that would make since, however, I step through this process in some form or another (considering the various OSes) about once a year. Still, I've been doing this the days of Windows 98 and this just seems to be a part of Windows life. I'm not really looking for a solution, more an explanation of why the detection process takes so long.

comment How can I force Parallels networking to obtain an IP through a wireless router?
Yes, I did this, but my IP is still coming from the router that my Ethernet is coming from. In my case, my wireless router gives out IPs in the 192.168.3.xxx range, while the Ethernet router gives out addresses in the 192.168.100.xxx range. I even changed to the recommended settings and restarted the computer. It is worth noting that running 'ipconfig /renew' also hangs in Parallels. There must be something else that I must need to do.
