Wrong! The only two things I listed that are excluded by default is Safari's cache and system logs, the latter of which is of trivial size on a home computer. Furthermore, almost everything else I listed aside from system logs would be included in the backup, like Firefox's caches, which are not stored in (~)/Library/Caches but in ~/Library/Application Support. Admittedly, that is a pretty cool, so +1 for teaching me something, snark notwithstanding ;)

comment Isolating external hard drive failure?
Thanks alexandru, I totally forgot about DW. I'll give that a shot. And no, I didn't disconnect the drive without unmounting it. I do use the drive a lot though, so it's certainly not inconceivable that I've burnt something out…

Nope, silent save the fan. Should have said that to begin with.

There is no fix for exactly the reason you specify.

comment Howto expand all columns in Excel spreadsheet?
Just a comment: "howto" as one word usually means "this is a guide" not "how do I".

comment How to change the default location for the standard File Save dialog in Mac OS X?
Most apps remember the folder that either: 1. Was last accessed by the system's file dialog; or 2. Was last accessed by that application.

I'm not clear on something: how are you attempting to play it if you can't see it anywhere on the iPod or in iTunes? Where are you playing it from?

I've been looking for a kext or other tool that would light the camera lamp while the microphone was listening, too. If you ever come up with something like that, let me know :)

comment How to backup Servers to an SSH-Host with low traffic and access to versions and encryption?
Quite right, but a good number of people don't realize this either: an acceptable definition of a perfectly-encrypted stream is that it is indistinguishable from a random stream (hence the need for a random entropy pool for encryption).

This sounds most suspiciously like a first-year university CS assignment question… (I don't mean to be rude if it's genuine.)

comment Safe to use high port numbers? (re: obscuring web services)
@wag2639 You're not really doing anything by changing a service's port number but making a script-kiddie find a slightly better script. War-dialing a block of IPs and ALSO portscanning every single port is trivial.
