comment Meaning of “expansion bus” or “peripheral bus”
internal and external do refer to the computer case. Same Wikipedia link for peripherals "Usually, the word peripheral is used to refer to a device external to the computer case, but the devices located inside the computer case are also technically peripherals. Devices that exist outside the computer case are called external peripherals, or auxiliary components. Devices that are inside the case such as internal hard drives or CD-ROM drives are also peripherals in technical terms and are called internal peripherals, but may not be recognized as peripherals by laypeople."

If I want to use it under both Ubuntu and Windows, which format shall I go, ext3 or ntfs?

comment Are SATA,USB, Ethernet, mouse, keyboard, serial/parallel ports connected to Southbridge via PCI bus?
Thanks! Not sure what I should look at in the diagram. (1) Is "PCI bridge" the southbridge? (2) Do you mean for some, USB ports are directly connected to southbridge without a PCI, and for others, there is a PCI bus in between?

comment Trying to understand a picture of computer buses
(2) "data must pass through the "bus" from the CPU to the northbridge (I quote bus because the NB may be integrated on the CPU), and then again over what typically is a PCI bus to the SB". But in the Wikipedia image, the connection between NB and SB is called internal bus. I wonder if communication between NB and SB is not via PCI in between?

Thanks! (1) "Most modern processors have integrated memory controllers, thus there is no need to talk to the northbridge for DMA". By "DMA", you mean CPU access memory? I think it means a device accessing memory directly without CPU in between. see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_memory_access.

Thanks! Are USB ports really directly connected to southbridge without PCI bus in between, as shown in the picture? Why in the output of udevadm info -a -n /dev/sdb for an external USB 2.0 HDD connected to a laptop, there is an item for PCI (see here)?

Yes, it can be peer to peer too. How would you say for both host-client and peer-to-peer?

comment What is more important for portable external HDD, interface or rotational speed?
@Hennes: The output of $ lsmod | grep hci is ` firewire_ohci 40172 0 and firewire_core 56906 1 firewire_ohci. Both are about firewire not USB, but there is ohci not ehci. Does my Ubuntu have USB 2.0 driver loaded? Note lsmod | grep HCI returns nothing.

@Hennes: How shall I know if the right driver for USB 2.0 is loaded under Ubuntu 12.04, when I connect the external HDD to my T400 laptop?

Thanks! (1) "On the other hand desktops have more parts generating even more heat (like power supply, CPU and GPU)." I wonder how external (desktop) HDDs generate more heat (like power supply, CPU and GPU)? (2) Do the two examples have fans on their external enclosures? If not, what examples do?

@Moab: you mean to sell the entire external HDDs, or just the HDDs without the enclosures (one enclosure's power adapter not working any more)?

Thanks! Besides that they are awesome, do you have other usages of the platters and magnets that you have taken out?

@Hennes: I just copied some files from my 7-year-old external IDE HDD 7200rpm, 160GB with USB 2.0 under my Ubuntu 12.04 to my 2~3-year-old Lenovo T400, and the speed is 8.3 MB/sec. How is it possibly so slow, compared to your "max 43MB/sec"?

@Hennes: Thanks! As to firewire, you said "Usually somewhat faster than USB2. Has some nice advantages over USB when streaming multimedia files, but for HDD access these are not important." I wonder why "for HDD access these are not important"?
