I only wish that the answer were this easy. It's not, see my answer below for the 'right' way and explanation.

comment Position cursor at end of variable or array member
Thank you Ben. I don't want everything inside the quotes, but rather I want (firstly) to replace the leading " (inclusive) up until the $ (exclusive) with the { character, and then (secondly) I want to replace everything from the last character of the variable (exclusive) up until the next " character (inclusive) with the } character.

Thank you Cheeku, that looks like a handy application. However I did mention that I cannot install applications on the system as they are typically not my systems.

comment Server 'remote IP' always returns IP address of the default gateway (router) for hits within the network
Thank you, I will consider it. The equipment has been adequate for our needs (20-port switch, 10-15 users at various times) but if you suggest that it is not up to the task then I will keep my eye out for issues with the switch and router in the future. Thank you for the insight!

@MikePennington: Thanks. Actually, this is a company network that I've inherited. There are over a dozen machines in addition to the router and switch.

comment Server 'remote IP' always returns IP address of the default gateway (router) for hits within the network
Why the sudden downvote? How could I improve the question? I feel that this question addresses a very general and possibly common scenario, for which there exists no current authoritative reference online. Additionally, although applicable to a general audience, it does in fact address a current situation that I'm facing.

I have updated the question with the router model and deleted my previous comments. Thanks.

@Rik: Thanks. The package is not available for my current (Kubuntu 12.10) desktop, I'm trying to build it now from source.

comment Why is there no /usr/bin/ in windows? Would it be dangerous to the entire Program Files to the path?
@JamesSnell: Right, but the Linux paradigm end result is an executable that is available on the global path. The Windows paradigm end result is that one must know the full path. I'm not interested in a specific directory of links to all executables per se, but rather having all the user-run executables in the path, and additionally understanding why Windows doesn't have this paradigm.

Thank you, I actually am using Cygwin in mintty for most things now. However, Python is a beast and needs the original cmd, even with the -i flag.

Terrific, thank you! In LO 4.1 one selects the entire row with Shift-Space. Other than that everything worked fine and I learned two new shortcuts. Thank you!
