comment Set name of Konsole window
Thank you choroba, but as I mention in the OP, setting all the tabs' titles is not practical and has too many drawbacks.

comment Set name of Konsole window
@choroba: Thank you, but that only sets the name of the first tab in a newly-opened Konsole window. It has no functionality advantage over setting the tab name in all the extant window tabs, which as I mentioned has drawbacks.

@tohuwawohu: Yes, it does set me in the right direction to answer the question. You can link to that post or paraphrase it as an answer, and I'll accept. Thank you tohuwawohu!

I prefer Calc as the lines are long (over 30 columns) and are of arbitrary length. I (human) need to read real data out of them.

comment Highlight each 10 line number (not the whole line)
Thank you philwills. In fact, that was the post that introduced me to relativenumbers, and taketwo links to it as well.

Thank you Ingo, that is a seriously creative solution! It does have some issues, though , such as loosing sync with the real line numbers for lines that wrap (as does Ecnerwal's solution). I do enjoy learning from the creative use of some new (to me) VIM functions. Thank you!

I'm breaking out the white-out and ruler! At least this might make an interesting conversations piece, so long as I never decide to change my terminal font size.

comment Highlight each 10 line number (not the whole line)
Thank you. I have tried relative line numbering, but I still prefer regular line numbering 95% of the time, and it is too much hassle (even on a shortcut) to enable it only when I need it. Eyeballing something close is better for me, but I would like a better gauge to eyeball by (hence highlighting every 10th line number).

I only wish that the answer were this easy. It's not, see my answer below for the 'right' way and explanation.

comment Position cursor at end of variable or array member
Thank you Ben. I don't want everything inside the quotes, but rather I want (firstly) to replace the leading " (inclusive) up until the $ (exclusive) with the { character, and then (secondly) I want to replace everything from the last character of the variable (exclusive) up until the next " character (inclusive) with the } character.

Thank you Cheeku, that looks like a handy application. However I did mention that I cannot install applications on the system as they are typically not my systems.

Thanks, I already do use Vimperator. However, the feature seems broken in my Vimp 3.8.1 on Firefox 25.
