comment Is modifying /etc/hostname enough to change the hostname?
If you have a reference to the old host name in /etc/hosts and didn't change it, you wouldn't be able to resolve the new host name. Some server apps don't work if your host name does not resolve to an IP address

Aha, that works. Not sure how the mask got affected, but thanks. Marking your answer as accepted -- could you merge the comment into it for future reference?

/srv seems to already have the correct permissions and ownership though: ls -ld /srv yields drwxrwsr-x+ 21 root wheel 4096 Feb 20 14:35 /srv

comment need write permission to network server on Linux and Macintosh
Try setting uid and gid to the user / group ID that you want to grant access. Additionally, for Samba mounts it might be better to use smbmount instead of directly calling mount

comment How to use MCabber (a Jabber client) with Google Enterprise Account?
Overriding the server field should not be necessary if your network administrator add the requisite SRV records to your domain's DNS entries. See e.g. kingant.net/check_xmpp_dns/?h=jabber.org

comment Issues when receiving e-mails from my gmail imap server
it's common for spam filters to be overly aggressive before they're properly trained - there's no quick fix but to train Outlook's by retagging your mail as non-junk.

comment Fedora 17 keeps using fedora 16 kernel
RPM packages allow for actions to be triggered pre-installation, post-installation and post-transaction; likely the grub2 package triggered installation of the build loader too soon (before the new kernels were installed, perhaps in %post instead of in %posttrans). Perhaps filing a bug in bugzilla.redhat.com would be in order? A lot of us testers upgraded to F17 pre-releases long time ago (and fix our grub install by hand) so maybe straight updates from F16 are not as well tested

what operating system are you running? The answer would likely be different if you're on Windows or Linux or OS X

comment Backing up MBR on laptop disks with recovery partiitions?
If I could just back up the recovery partition itself, plus any custom MBR but without the partition table (because everything after the recovery partition might change over time as I repartition for different OSes) that'd be nice. If only Sony allows creating recovery media on USB sticks. The netbook in question does not even have an optical drive (and I have a subnotebook with the same problem too).

with these custom bootloaders, would backing up the first 446 bytes (the MBR) of the disk be sufficient to fix things?

Before reinstalling, try checking, on machine B, if the same behavior occurs on a fresh user account. It might be due to some configuration files in ~/Library (though I'm not sure which)
