Linux accounts shared memory in the memory for each process, which can lead to bogus sums if you have lots of processes attached to one largish shared memory segment. top, ps, and similar programs are all affected by this in the same way.

Shadyabhi: That output looks OK. I'd still try out a newer kernel, or perhaps an older kernel. Unless your hardware is broken, it's mostly the kernel that controls it.

If your Windows were on a hardware RAID, you wouldn't be able to "see" /dev/sda and /dev/sdb as separate drives.
