comment Why is MacVim much faster than Vim in the Terminal?
I've spent a serious amount of time trying to debug the speed difference mentioned here. It's very visible both in Terminal.app and in iTerm2.app (although it manifests slightly differently). It's not visible in terminals under XQuartz on the same computer using the same vim executable. My impression is that for iTerm2, the bottleneck seems to be in the transferral of data from the forked ptty session into iTerm2. But I can't imagine why that would be different for iTerm2 than it is for rxvt/xterm/etc.

comment If I have left and right tmux panes, how can I visually tell which is focused?
I'm running tmux 1.8. In this version, with a single vertical split, it appears that when the leftmost pane is selected, only the top half of the vertical split line is highlighted, and when the rightmost pane is selected, only the bottom half of the vertical split line is highlighted. I believe this is a relatively new change; didn't notice it in older builds.

comment How do I keep vim from writing anything to the hard drive?
Note that vim running in a chroot environment will have no way of accessing the secure documents, unless they're copied into that environment. (Your .vimrc and other vim configuration data would have to be copied in there as well)

comment Vim - Adding empty line between lines
@jpaugh Assuming that you mean :%s/$/<C-V><CR><CR> (to use common vim-folk encoding of keypresses), that approach just adds a newline after each line. That is, lines which are already separated by blanks (see Line 3 -> Line 4, in the example text) wind up getting extra blank lines. Original question was to avoid adding extra blank lines where they already existed in the starting text.

comment Something is accessing the internet on my computer. How do I know which one?
bitcoin-qt does not provide a mechanism to limit outgoing bandwidth usage. Huge outward network traffic by the program is a very common complaint, apparently.

comment Invoking vi through find | xargs breaks my terminal. Why?
Side note: You can perform this operation entirely within vim, not using find or xargs at all. Open vim with no arguments, then run :args **/*.txt<CR> to set vim's arguments from inside the editor.

comment How can I get ssh-agent working over ssh and in tmux (on OS X)?
Hm.. after digging further, I agree -- the settings I listed are already in the defaults, and if I run tmux without a .tmux.conf file, everything works properly. And if I remove the line I quoted from my .tmux.conf file, that is working for me as well, although it didn't before. There's clearly something else going wrong occasionally. Maybe to do with suspend/restore or attach/detach or sshing into a tmux session remotely. I'll keep my eyes open and update if I find the factor which makes it reproducible.

comment OS X Lion desktop switching speed
In earlier OS X releases, this completely removed the animated transition triggered by switching between workspaces. In effect, it would just cut straight to the new workspace, without any transition at all.
