I'm a software engineer that writes both application and system-level code. I've coded in a variety of languages, both compiled and interpreted. I like working with Linux, and have been using it for over 15 years. I'm also familiar with zOS, AIX, and have been known to dabble in Windows development. I'm a fan of open-source software, and have run a variety of Linux distributions over the years.

comment Why are the Windows 7 Noticiation Icons suddenly too big?
The desktop icons can do this as well if you accidentally zoom there.

comment How does copying files work with regards to RAM, and can I speed this up?
This is most apparent when reading something from the RAM cache at a later date. If you restart your computer, start a program, exit it, and start it again, you'll probably notice that it started much quicker the second time.

comment Why do I need to do a manual driver update in 2011?
That depends. Sometimes a newer driver fixes bugs or performance issues that you don't even know you have.

comment What's the difference between “shutting down the computer” vs “shutting down the hard disk”?
Hard drives use a permanent form of storage via magnetic media. The contents aren't lost just because power is removed from the device. Flash memory works in a similar manner. The DRAM (main memory) in your computer requires power in order to retain its contents.

comment CPU giving 1/3 performance compared to same CPUs
Clean out the dust bunnies in the CPU fan. It's probably being thermally throttled down.

comment What is a “Mainframe”? What is a “Workstation”?
Mainframes are not rare at all. IBM is making tons of money selling them: infoworld.com/t/servers/…

comment Does stat/lstat on nonexistent file cause a disk seek?
If you want to prove this to yourself, try this out. Restart the system, so the cache is cleared out. Then run a "find" command. Watch as your disk seeks. Once the command finishes, run the command again. They amount of disk activity will be noticeably lower.

That CPU score is far, far too low.
