comment How to create a virtual audio device and stream audio input with it
Hi, I've been looking for a solution to this problem for a while too. I have tried VAC but think it only works as a 'what you hear' re-direct/loopback... Am I right in saying that VAC will not help with D3D apps which use the system's default audio device and DON'T have a setting to change which audio device to use? The problem is that if you're running the app/game in a windowed mode, you also get Windows sounds piped through the system-default audio device (which would need to be the VAC virtual device). Anyone know of something that lets you only isolate the sound from any D3D app/game?

comment Would hybrid drive work after SSD failure
I would be concerned if the drive tries to cache to failed regions of the SSD component and then blindly reads to them. Hopefully they have SMART reporting for the SSD to stop this...

comment Why is it bad to map network drives in Windows?
This is common in cross-platform dev software too. For example, Intellij/PhpStorm don't support Window's UNC paths so mapped drives are the only non-local drive option. Of course there's FTP too but that's not as quick.

comment A new motherboard or a new ATI graphics chip?
Have you tried opening it up and cleaning the heat pipes/fans of dust? You could also try a laptop cooling mat (the symptoms would match a heat issue too).

comment How to create Windows 7 Recovery disc if it's home edition and it's broken at the moment?
Are you able to get in to Windows if you start in safe mode? Press F8 before the 'loading' screen comes up when you turn on your PC and try that. You can then look at system restore or look through the event log to work out what's happening. Coincidentally my PC does this with certain USB devices attached (i.e. printer, joystick - things that need a bit of power). So you could also try unplugging all but keyboard and mouse and see if that helps. YMMV!

comment Students/staff sharing many computers to develop software
Unless the user accounts all have admin rights, wouldn't it be enough to store the files within the My Docs folder in the Windows 8 machines (~ for the macs)? This would solve the visibility issues but not the distribution - it would still need to be pushed to git unless the user always uses the same PC.

comment Ethernet splitter
For clarity, there is such a thing as ethernet spitters. We use them here on sites when we're low on ports. They allow 2 devices to use a single run of network cable. You need one splitter at each end and it uses 2 of the twisted pairs per port. Unfortunately some devices (printers, VOIP phones) can have issues with this - embedded LAN often needs to be set to run at half-duplex in such a configuration. But it's still better than wireless.

Cheers mate. Slipped my mind. I've seen HP's bundled bloatware making use of Tasks before.

It would be nice to know a few more details i.e. what type of database server and what OS you're using, local or remote servers etc.
