comment How does my ISP (introducing vectoring) know which DSL modem I am using?
The very simple answer might be that they have a record of whether or not they sold you one.

comment Auto answer “Y” to simple CLI command with DOS command
Good gravy, if you don't want the options, the entire source for yes is int main() { while ( 1 ) { printf("y\n"); } }.

comment Simulate pgrep using plain grep
awk is specified in POSIX, so odds are good that if you have a system with grep, you'll have it. Same for sed.

awk is a better bet than sed or cut for picking bits out of the output of ps.

comment What is an ISO file extension regarding a graphics file?
They're files for the IsoDraw technical drawing package. Good question, just not about programming.

comment How to store and preserve lots of data?
This fails miserably when you have an accident that deletes data on the first copy and the second one is automagically synced to mirror it.

comment Is BCCing e-mails guaranteed to be reliable?
That trick won't work in all cases because the standards don't require that delivery traverses something that can be given a recipient address outside of the headers. MTP didn't exist until six years after the BCC behavior was first defined (RFC 680, in 1975); SMTP came a year later.

@afrazier: Had I not already added a competing answer, I'd have downvoted this one for not answering the OP's question.
