comment How to find device node on Mac OS X
Sorry, no offense Nevin. It's great that you're actually go in for my question. It's not that I paid money for it, Roland gave our FabLab one and I want to provide help to others that might have problems. On the support page you mentioned Roland also states: "Q: Does iModela operate on Linux?" - "A: No. It is not compatible with Linux operating system." And that's just wrong too, so as MacOSX is a *NIX OS there has to be a device node somewhere. Besides that this question is about iModela, how can one find out what device uses which node?

You're not reading my question at that part where I point out that it IS possible even if Roland says it ain't? They also state it is not possible on Linux, but it is. So please focus on "how to find a specific device node under OSX" as it can be talked to like a generic text-only printer so only the device node is needed...

It's not that I don't like your answer, it's because it does not work! It is not possible to put 192- into the IP field.

Yes it could be a problem, but not in this case. I just wired this up to demonstrate the problem better. The problem was experienced without any of this "sniffing" stuff. I just wanted to show that the device is spitting out it's data right by showing it simultaniously.

I did not try higher values than 115200, so I can not surely say they make problems aswell. The breadboard is used to split the signal so I can use it on the native port and the USB-to-Serial one. No electrical parts there except some wires. My USB-to-Serial device has an open (wire) end and I applied a RJ45 jack to it, so I can definitly say the GND is connected correct. Without connecting it I get no output. So I think this should be OK. The fact that many others use this adapters without any problems is exactly the part of the problem that drives me crazy...

comment Which command line text editor has the closest keybindings to Notepadd++, Gedit, or Kate (or any modern CUA style editor)?
I know it's not in scope of your question, but when it comes to command line the only one is vim! Worth every second of learning.
