comment Error code 2503 - Cannot install software on Windows 7 (64Bit)
Hi Dave. The two it seems are related. I cannot save from Google Chrome to any folder, nor can I install or uninstall software. It's a permission issue, but how and why this would happen I am not sure. I have added an edit above.

Hi Dave. This happens if I try to install or uninstall anything/anywhere on the PC.

Bizarre thing since I got the machine back is that I cannot save files from Chrome, with an error message in the file's status of Insufficient Permissions. And I can also not install software. I get an error code which I forget now as I'm not at my PC but it's in 2000s something like 2503. But that's another question.

As for the drive. I did try your solution of DFT but it got stuck at some point in the testing. I then did a search on Western Digital data recovery and came across some software people swore by called Wondershare Data Recovery. I bought it and have been running it on an older XP machine of mine and so far managed to recover about 15Gb of a 1Tb drive. Seems to get stuck at 4% though. I'll leave it to run another day or so bit I'm afraid I may have lost a lot of files.

Hi Francis. I took the machine back to the guy I bought it from and with a change to the Bios he was able to get the machine running again. Heckled knows what happened there.

Hi Francis. Typing from my phone but yes, I have another PC where I can download DFT. Drive is not clicking and it's a relatively new PC. Not sure about viruses as I always scan anything I download and open and my antivirus is always up to date. What is freakishly odd is that first the external drive stopped, and now the internal OS drive. Both of which I think are relatively new. Will try your solutions first. Thanks again.

If I try boot into safe mode, the files it runs through is super slow, then bombs out at classpnp.sys?

Hi Francis. Your solution worked and I was able to get to the BSOD. Here is the code. 0x0000007B (0xFFFFF880009A97E8, 0xFFFFFFFFC0000034, 0X0000000000000000, 0X0000000000000000). Phew...hope that's right.
