comment How to share an external USB drive over network in OS X?
Last time I had this it was a networking problem. if it's over Wifi can you confirm the machines can see each other (ping or so?). You could also enable ftp and try if you are able to connect from another machine. Actually in my case I had just to reboot the router - so try that also :)

Actually I think your diagnosis is flawed. As you can see from the discussion I was able to format it to FAT32 (NTFS was also available) and was able to write to it. Neither the "original" image nor ISO 9660 would allow that.

Well I'm already aware that I can fix the problem under a "proper" OS. It's more that I would be interested how to solve it under windows as this had happened to me several times - and rebooting is quite the hassle.

Yes formatting and writing to it works as expected. It's just that the formatted partition is 2.3GB instead of 8.

comment Is there a command line equivalent to cut and paste metaphor for files?
not really a solution - but have you considered pushdand popd. You might do something like mv `popd`/* . as alternative to cut/paste

comment Play a sound or chime through ssh
so now I'm confused - we had sound output on the "remote machine" and sound output on the "local mac" - and none is useful. Can you clarify your setup?

Oh that reminds me on the say command of macs - gohgarry.wordpress.com/2010/01/16/fun-with-mac-say-command - you could issue one of these. Might freak your coworkers ;)

So you want to play on the machine running matlab? Then you could try this snippet in matlab: load handel; sound(y,Fs) The other way I actually send myself a tweet or email as reminder - which will then also produce a sound ;)

revised How can I increase the WiFi client limit on a Huawei B153?
put final solution in as it is not trivial to do & removed some output, that was just making the page longer.
