comment How will single-bit memory error affect Linux?
Looks like a nice answer. Minor quibble with “(If you are not signed in as “root,” use “sudo.” You will be asked for the “root” password.)” – sudo asks for user pw. From man sudoers, “Unlike su(1), when sudoers requires authentication, it validates the invoking user's credentials, not the target user's (or root's) credentials” unless told otherwise by sudoer flags

comment One (or at most two) click listen to sound file
Isaac, I saw that comment. Also, I doubt that mplay32 is on your W7 system. However, it probably is worth an experiment to find out how well it works on your system if you have it installed. It is easy to script 1-click or no-click operation of players with command-line interfaces. (On a different topic, and along the lines of previous answer, while the igorware.com/small-player doesn't have a CLI, if you double click on a name it interrupts what it's playing and immediately starts playing what you clicked on.)

Also, can you test if any methods in 101974 work on your system? Does start /min mplay32 /play /close %WINDIR%\media\tada.wav work?

If you turn on single-click execution instead of double-click, you will avoid a lot of clicks in the long run.

comment I want to change DPI with Imagemagick without changing the actual byte-size of the image data
Yes, I should have paid more attention to the question! Rereading it, JPG isn't mentioned, PNG clearly is.

Re latency, do you know of documentation on which of the 4-4-4-12 CAS numbers (as in picture) would need to change?

I'll ask for a replacement, but I'm looking at alternatives in case of problems or delays with replacement.

comment Did gzip destroy my log file?
Had the process logging to the file finished with it before you compressed it? If file was still open in a process, the process can still write to the file even if you change the name.

comment Scripts shell recording playback
Your script ... > timingsfile should be script ... 2> timingsfile to capture stderr (the timing data output) in timingsfile, rather than stdout. Also, note that JPerkSter already is using script.
