comment How do I delete left-over Windows Update folders?
Why do you think those files have anything to do with Windows Update? Why are you trying to delete files you know nothing about? If that has been your practice, it is no wonder you have a history of failed updates.

comment Native windows cmd program to download a file
Would this not also work in Windows XP and Vista, provided Powershell was installed?

So what is the question? Is there some difficulty re-setting those variables?

comment Is it possible to have Grub2's boot.img in the MBR and have it load core.img from a separate boot partition?
Putting any sort of code in the no-man's land preceding the 1st partition is just plain nuts, and certainly one of GRUB's biggest failings.

comment How can I know when my IP lease expires?
My Netgear router invariably denies all ip lease renewal requests and assigns a different ip. Its DHCP behavior has zero configurability.

comment Can't see a file that “exists” in Temporary Internet Files
Do not use Explorer to view system files - it lies endlessly. Use "dir" with the -force parameter in powershell, or the equiv. in cmd.exe. You may be surprised. Ditto using a boot-time app to move stuff as necessary. Some defrag apps can "compactify" the file system that way, then you can use Disk Manager to shrink.

comment Can I set my Windows to boot without stop on password verification even when having a password set?
@shinrai: certainly insecure, but not at all pointless. Security is frequently not much of a concern: not everybody puts stuff on their computer that they feel they need to hide.

comment Windows 7 hibernation behavior
Sounds normal to me, except for the programs crashing. Hibernation is just about the same as shutdown, except the contents of memory is written to the hibernation file first. If you have many gigabytes of memory, that could easily take 30 seconds or more.

comment Directly edit the hard disk on Windows Vista
Note that all raw disk edits will require the relevant file system to be dismounted/locked, so there will be no editing the "system" partition from an application running "inside" it. See msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/…
