Any non-volatile memory stored program routines used by any microprocessor or fpga in any motherboard subsystem or peripheral.

comment What is the difference between BIOS and firmware?
BIOS is the bootstrap firmware that allows the computer to start up, find all those other interface firmwares, the OS storage (not necessarily a drive) and load the OS. From "pull yourself up by your bootstraps".

comment Cisco AnyConnect VPN Error: “Failed to initialize connection subsystem.”
Latest Poodle SSL3 fix KB3023607 causes this error sporadically on Windows 7 and on every Windows 8.1 system I manage. Haven't hit the Work Offline issue, but one of my users will find it as well.

comment Cisco AnyConnect VPN Error: “Failed to initialize connection subsystem.”
Often both vpnui.exe and vpnagent.exe need to be set to at least Windows 7 compatibility on Windows 8.1 when this happens, just did the fix this morning to resurrect Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client. End result of the last Poodle SSL3 fix in KB3023607

comment What is the correct name for a USB flash drive?
CompactFlash, CompactFlash II is a specification, and a specific memory card with a PCMCIA interface. That's its official name and therefore not to be confused with flash drives of the USB persuasion.

comment Frequently clearing Windows temp folder causes problems with some apps
Don't clear temp files that are newer than your current boot time/date stamp. The system shouldn't allow you to delete open files, but if it was something currently relevant to a running process, it may cause an issue.

comment Want a wireless device which can catch Wifi signals and beam it again and also pass internet through ethernet cable to desktop
Extender, repeater are the same idea. D-Link Wireless Range Extender From the website, that's its purpose. As to sharing folders, that is a router firewall and workstation setup which will have security issues. Windows shares allowed on the internet tend to be a bad idea and are topic for another question that needs to be asked => (How do I share desktop folders with this router?). The extender only allows extending the signal range, not firewalling.

Not a product recommendation site as brand and model suggestions go stale pretty immediately. Questions on how the devices work, what they are or how to set them up are welcome.

comment Windows XP Kernal Hack?
Waste of time, for what's increasingly a security sieve. It's been answered multiple times on Superuser why Windows 32 bit desktop OS has an address limit.

comment What would happen if you connected two wireless NICs' antennas with one coaxial cable?
The transmitted signal would swamp the opposing unit's receiver causing either damage or so much distortion that nothing could be decoded. Already been there with access points too close together to test a bridged wireless link. They needed separation before the receivers would work.

comment Upgraded RAM on Samsung notebook computer boots into OS but hangs then
Just something I've seen with memory issues, partial boots and resultant MFT destruction on Windows OS. You've created a memory issue where the system is partially booted. While it's less likely with Windows 7 and above, the chance still exists for a memory write to a critical area to be interrupted by the memory fault. And it's pretty obvious that you're finding the manual is correct.

Manufacturer's manual lists for this system maximum memory at 8192 with 4096 per slot. Always check their specs before ordering memory. It's what they've programmed the memory controller to address per slot that matters. You've exceeded that spec with the usual predictable results. If you're lucky, the computer won't boot at all and will prevent hard drive corruption which will be your next issue if you keep trying to force it.

comment Beep in headphone when usb-mouse is plugged in or moved
This also can be a symptom of having a broken wire in the mouse cable. The disconnect/reconnect beep is caused as the mouse electronics drop offline and get redetected.

comment Implications of using 192.168.1.255 for second access point
Hmm, a router that doesn't check the Net Mask when you set the device IP address and limit the assigned address to valid numbers. Might want to tell us the brand and model number so we can avoid it like the plague. Unless you're using some oddball CIDR Mask on the internal addressing.
